Course Description and Objective

The Level I and II Spanish language courses will focus on the development, or continued development, of communicative competence in the target language and understanding of the culture(s) of the people who speak the language. It assumes that the students have had limited exposure to the language.

Students will learn to listen, speak, read, and write in Spanish using the guidelines defined by the Georgia Performance Standards for High School Foreign Language. The standards can be found at Students will be exposed to heritage speakers and cultures from around the globe. They will learn the language by participating in an active, integrated classroom setting. These coursesrequire that students participate every dayin class. The daily activities that are conducted can’t be duplicated outside of the classroom or during a tutorial. It is extremely important that the students come prepared and willing to engage.

I will use strategies in the classroom that are research-based and proven effective. During the first 3-4 weeks it is normal for your student to feel insecure about learning, or continuing learning, a new language. This is to be expected. After a few weeks of comprehensible input, the anxiety will begin to dissipate as students begin to produce the language.

21st Century Skills

Learning a second language is essential in today’s world due to an expanding global economy and increasing job opportunities requiring one or more languages other than English. Research shows that students who study a second language achieve higher on SAT/ACT scores and show improvement in other subjects as well.

Assessments/Evaluations/Required Student Products:

Although these courses do incorporate the traditional methods of assessments, i.e. homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and a final exam, a major portion of the grade will come from classwork and participation. It is imperative that every available minute of each class is used optimally.

I. Grades

Your grade is based on cumulative points for the following:

50%Summative (Tests/Quizzes/Projects)-Each theme will include a quiz and at the end each unit there will be a chapter test and/or project.

30%Formative (Participation/Speaking/Classwork/Homework/Binder)- Includes on-time completion and contribution to class activities, displaying a positive attitude, cooperating with teacher and peers, and listening proactively during instruction. Any classwork missed due to having to leave the class for disciplinary issues will receive zeros.

Each activity will be worth 5-10 points. Each week you can gain between 35- 50 points. To get ALL your points do the following:

Do your best; be polite; ask questions and answer questions; add humor and contribute to stories; speak Spanish as much as possible; make corrections on work that we review; listen to classmates and teachers actively; sing or read along to songs; come to class prepared and on time, follow school and class rules.

Late homework will be worth half credit unless you had an excused absent when assigned. Student will have equal amount of the days absent to turn in homework for full credit. Communicate with me when there are special circumstances butotherwise your homework should be ready to turn in at the beginning of each class. Please be sure to turn in your absence slip to the attendance office as soon as possible to prevent delays in receiving your make-up work.

20% Final Exam – The final exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions, one writing prompt and three speaking prompts. You will be provided the possible speaking and writing prompts beforehand. It is your responsibility to prepare before the test.

II. House Agreements

a. Entering and exiting the classroom

  • Be in your seat when the bell rings to be considered on-time. Otherwise, you will need to complete a detention. If you are arriving tardy with a pass from another teacher, please make sure that the pass has the teacher’s signature, time and date on it. Be in seats at all times until excused. You may NOT line up at the door for exiting. Each student’s desk needs to be checked before exiting to insure that the class remains orderly and neat. Book and seat numbers will be checked daily.
  • Take out your materials, sharpen your pencils and begin the activator assignment. There will be five minutes for completing thisactivity while I take attendance and collector check completion of homework. With a cooperative setting, we can get everything done effectively and you learn the material.

b. Bathroom passes

  • You have six bathroom passes per semester and may use them accordingly. You may not leave the class the first or last ten minutes. You already have 30 extra credit points added to your grade. Every time you leave the class, you lose 5 points. After your six passes are used, you may not leave the classroom for any reason. Use them wisely! You will lose all bathroom privileges if you abuse the policy. No student may leave the class without using a pass. If you leave without a pass or permission, you will receive a referral. You should not be out of class more than 4 minutes. There will always be emergency situations but you are responsible for returning in due time otherwise it will be considered as skipping. Please do NOT wander the halls or go to other buildings.The more you’re in class, the more you will learn.

c. Cell phones/iPods/electronics in class

  • All visible cell phones in class will be confiscated and turned into the front office.You are NOT permitted to charge your phones in the classroom. Turn your cell phone off before entering the classroom. Any cell phone distractions will result in confiscation. Refusing to hand me the cell phone after a distraction has occurred or if the phone is visible will result in a referral to administration. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy. The school nor myself will be responsible for any damage and/or lost cell phones due to students not following school and class policies.

d. Food/Gum/Drinksin class

  • There will be no food or drinks permitted in the classroom. Water or water-based liquids are okay but anything else isa distraction. Anyone that refuses to throw away their food/gum/ drink before entering will receive a detention/referral. For lunch periods, your food must be consumed in the cafeteria. You are not permitted to bring food back to class. The first two incidences will receive a detention. The third incident will receive a referral.
  • If you are unable to get through the line in due time, you MUSThave a signed pass from an administrator indicating that they witnessed you in line without enough time to consume your food.

e.Dress Code

  • Follow it! We are in an academic setting so let’s focus on teaching and learning while we are together. I am required to report any violations to the dress code to an administrator. No backpacks will be allowed in class. If you have to leave the class to turn in your backpack to the office, you will lose a restroom pass. Purchase a locker and you will have plenty of room to keep all of your belongings.

f. Put-down/Bullying

  • EVERYstudent and teacher has the right to a safe-learning and -working environment. You are not permitted to call anyone anything other than their proper name or title. You are NOT permitted to touch the desk, the person or the belongings of myself or another student. You will be held accountable for any violation of this policy. You may disagree with others but no one has the right to emotionally or physically impede the education of another. If you engage in put-downs/bullying, I will give you one warning. If you begin or continue to argue, you will receive a referral.

g. Distracting class instruction

  • In order to prepare ALL students for the world beyond high school, it is vital that the class operate without undue interruptions. Talking unless it is part of an assignment will not be tolerated.

III. Materials- Be sure to keep all the handouts in your binder so that you have a comprehensive study guide for quizzes and tests. All assessments will be aligned with the instruction so staying organized will insure success in the class. You will not be given extra copies of the assignment. It is your responsibility to stay organized as a high school student. Your materials for class are your responsibility. I will not provide anyone class materials other than markers, scissors and/or poster paper for class projects. Materials for projects that are issued outside of the classroom will be the student’s responsibility.

Practice Workbook:These activities will be handouts and should be organized and in order according to each unit.

Guided Practice: These are activities that will also be handouts. These will be perfect studying tools to prepare for quizzes and tests.

Vocabulary –Each chapter requires that you write a list of vocabulary. Keep each section in order and use for practice activities and for studying.

Notes and Activators – This section will include all information from the textbook or PowerPoints. You must keep your notes and activators dated and organized.

*There will betwo unannounced binder checksduring each semester. Each binder check will be worth 25 points. Be sure your binder is always up to date, organized and brought to class. You will NOT be permitted to make up this assignment if your binder is not with you and organized the day of the check.

Books will be provided for your use in class. You may check out a book. However, if you lose it, you must replace it at a $65 cost.
