Bellbird Public School Policy Statements
Purpose
Homework bridges the gap between learning at school and learning at home.
It reinforces work done in class and helps develop skills such research and time management
Homework helps establish the habits of study, concentration and discipline.
General Principles
Ideal homework takes into account student’s other commitments, such as sport and home responsibilities. It needs to incorporate everyday experiences and support family activities and family participation.
Home reading is the mainstay of all homework and ties into the school’s Diamond Award Criteria.
Practice in spelling and number facts is an important part of regular homework.
Aims
· To establish regular patterns of homework and to develop sound work habits in children.
· To provide opportunities for students to contribute to their family unit and to make choices about what, when and how they complete their homework.
· To provide opportunities for parents to become involved in their children’s education.
· To support students in their development of skills, knowledge and concepts according to their stage of development.
Implementation.
· It is the responsibility of teachers to assign, mark and monitor homework. (Attachment 3)
· Home reading completion must be documented to satisfy the requirements for the Diamond Award.
· Where homework is regularly not completed, parents are to be informed.
· Homework completion is the responsibility of the parent/guardians.
· The Homework grid (Attachment 1, 2) is to be the main vehicle for homework activities.
· Students are expected to complete the activities and document this completion.
· This may be as simple as a journal.
· Cells may be added by individual teachers for specific purposes or some cells such as project completion, may take on a larger role.
· Students are expected to complete the following Homework Cell requirements.
Expectations
Early Stage One
· Home reading each night.
· One Homework Cell activity each week.
· Five different Homework Cell activities completed each term.
Stage One
· Home reading each night.
· Spelling practice
· One Homework Cell activity each week.
· Five different Homework Cell activities completed each term.
Stage Two
· Home reading each night.
· Spelling and number facts
· Five Homework Cell activities each week.
· All different Homework Cell activities completed each term.
Stage Three
· Home reading each night.
· Spelling and number fact practice.
· Five Homework Cell activities each week.
· All different Homework Cells activities completed each five-week block.
Evaluation
The homework policy will be reviewed to ensure that it is enhancing student learning outcomes and family requirements.
