Primary Objective:

To assist in the provision of high quality patient centred services to resident and visiting clients and other delegated duties associated with the efficient running of the Ward.

Area of Responsibility / Performance Measures
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse assist nursing staff with the provision of quality patient care /
  • Direct specific inquiries from patients and visitors, and relay accurate information to the nurse in charge.
  • Continually observe patients to ensure safety and comfort, and notify immediately any concerns to the nurse responsible for the patient.
  • Uphold patient dignity, self-respect, confidentiality and individuality.
  • Help with patient washes/lifting/feeding etc.
  • Help patients pack – transfers/discharges.
  • Put out water jugs and fluid balance charts.
  • Serve patients cups of tea am/pm.
  • Make beds.
  • Assist with meal trays.
  • Answer bells if required.
  • Make patients toast in the morning.

Area of Responsibility / Performance Measures
General Ward duties /
  • Answer phones, if no staff free.
  • Keep ward area and corridor tidy.
  • Set up linen trolley
  • Collect menus.
  • Make discharge beds.
  • Ensure bottle holders at each bed.
  • Remove clothes/linen from heaters.
  • Check beds in good repair.
  • Keep hand cleaner containers full.
  • Keep glove containers full.

Cleaning of Areas and Equipment Sluice Room /
  • Clean all stainless steel benches.
  • Clean and sterilise soiled pans, bowls etc.
  • Replace linen bags when full.
  • Keep cupboards clean and tidy.
  • Dry pans before putting away.
  • Keep stock of rags folded in cupboard.
  • Restock pan bags.
  • Scrub out sterilisers.
  • Clean specified equipment for patient use.

Bathrooms/Ensuites
/
  • Clean commodes, bottle holders.
  • Wipe down commodes.
  • Keep free of soiled linens.
  • Change shower/toilet curtains.
  • Clean hi-toilet seat.
  • Clean toilet mats.
  • Replace bath mats as necessary.
  • Clean all ensuites adjacent to single rooms.

Flower/Equipment Rooms
/
  • Keep tidy.
  • Clean vases.
  • Keep shelves clean and tidy.
  • Clean drip stands and label.

Treatment Room
/
  • Clean stainless steel benches.
  • Refill shelves.
  • Clean cupboards, shelves, trolleys.
  • Defrost fridge.

Kitchen
/
  • Clean and tidy fridge – no outdated stock.
  • Keep ice buckets full.
  • Clean benches.
  • Keep microwave, milkshake machine, toaster clean.
  • Keep zip full and hot.
  • Keep kitchen trolleys clean.
  • Keep cupboards clean, tidy and stocked.
  • Defrost fridge as required.
  • Keep storage containers clean.
  • Fill water container.

Linen Room
/
  • Cut ties and tidy linen.
  • Fill ward trolley each morning
  • Top up trolleys in afternoon.
  • Order cleaning cloths, fold when arrive.
  • Fill in linen sheet.
  • Stock shelves when empty, towels etc.
  • Change room curtains when needed.

Area of Responsibility / Performance Measures
Sunroom
/
  • Keep magazines tidy.
  • Ensure carpets and chairs clean – arrange with Clinical Nurse Leader if required.
  • Drapes clean and tidy – send to cleaners if necessary.

Maintain professional skills /
  • Meet the performance expectations as identified in the Staff Development Performance Review process
  • Possess Southern District Health Board CPR or undertake to attain one within three months of appointment.
  • Perform all duties in a responsible manner, with due care for the heath and safety of self and other employees, patients and the general public, within the limit of his/her knowledge base.
  • Dress code as in compliance with SDHB uniform policy.

Ensure provision of a safe clean environment for patients staff and visitors /
  • Observe and practice safe working methods using safety equipment where it is provided, and report unsafe working conditions or equipment to the Clinical Nurse Leader.
  • Be responsible for the safety of the ward surroundings and equipment, including regular cleaning, checking, tidiness security.
  • Undertake restocking within the Unit, eg, toiletries, kitchen supplies, linen etc as determined by the Clinical Nurse Leader.

Actively uphold Southern District Health Board’s philosophy, policies and procedures /
  • Ensure all policies, procedures and standards of practice within the Southern District Health Boards, relevant Acts, Regulations, Employment Agreements and statutory obligations are adhered to in the interest of client safety, good employer requirements of the Health & Disability Services Act and the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity and the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Actively participate in quality assurance activities.

Perform such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Clinical Nurse Leader. /
  • Carry out duties as directed in an efficient and productive manner.

Be subject to the overall direction of Southern District Health Board. /
  • Comply with Southern District Health Board policies and directives.
