Koori ArtExpressions 2016
Songlines: The living narrative of our nation
Exhibition: Australian National Maritime Museum
Thursday 24 November 2016 (new date)–27 January 2017
Koori Art Expressions is a Public Schools NSW visual arts program open to all students Kindergarten to Year 12. The exhibition will run from 24November 2016 to27 January 2017 at the Australian National Maritime Museum, 2 Murray Street,Sydney NSW 2000. All schools, independently of whether they have Aboriginal students enrolled or not, are encouraged to participate in this program.
The theme for this year’s exhibition isSonglines: The living narrative of our nation, which gives students the opportunity to express their understanding and appreciation of the NAIDOC Week topic in 2016.“NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.
This year the theme highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea.The theme is an opportunity to pay respects to country; honour those who work tirelessly on preserving land, sea and culture and to share the stories of many sites of significance or sacred places with the nation. Visit the NAIDOC website for further information:
If your school wishes to participate inKoori Art Expressions 2016: Songlines: The living narrative of our nation, you may submit up to 4works of art from your school.

Art Works
Conditions of entry
Students Kindergarten - Year 12 from public schools in the Ultimo Operational Directorate are able to submit works for consideration to be shown at the Australian National Maritime Museum. All works will be considered; however only works of the highest quality can be exhibited. All schools that submit works will be fairly represented according to what is submitted.
All works submitted for inclusion in Songlines: The living narrative of our nationare required to meet the following requirements:
- Artworks must have been completed at school.
Students will create a body of work that reflects exploration of the NAIDOC theme in 2016, Songlines: The living narrative of our nation
- In art making, a selection of forms including digital images, collage, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and fibre will be used to express their ideas and feelings.
- Each school may submit a maximum of FOUR artworks, preferably reflecting a diversity of forms, grade cohort and student population. Works can be individual, small group or whole class.
- There is an expectation that the works will have derived from art appreciation lessons where children will have looked at the work of other artists (see NSW Creative Arts syllabi). On the permission form there is a section asking for the name of the artist (and possibly the particular artwork) that inspired the work done by the student. This information will be required by the curators of the exhibition.
- No work will be exhibited without the permission form being glued to the back of the work (2D) or attached to it in some other secure way (3D).
- Please consider a variety of art forms (e.g. drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture and photography).
- All works must be FRAMED with medium or large “D” hooks on the back. The “D” hooks should be screwed in 1/3 of the way down. Works cannot be framed by the Koori Art Expressions committee and therefore works which are not framed and ready to hang will not be considered. Please note that we will pursue this rule vigorously.
- If you are developing a sculpture or installation please consider how the work will be displayed. There are strict occupational health and safety rules in place at the Australian National Maritime Museumthat must be adhered to.
- If you wish your work to be displayed in a particular way or order, please include a photograph or clear diagram of how you want it to be shown.
- Schools must email a description of the works to later than Friday 21 October 2016, including title of work, author [student(s)’ first name or class], school, academic year and a very succinct explanation of the work. The length of this text must not exceed 50 words, (excluding title, artist(s)’ name(s), year, school and media). These are Australian National Maritime Museum requirements.
- By participating in Koori Art Expressions schools, parents and carers, or students over 18 years of age, grant to the NSW Department of Education (DoE), represented by Public Schools NSW, a permanent, royalty-free, worldwide, irrevocable, ongoing, not-exclusive licence (including a right to sub-licence) to use, reproduce, communicate, broadcast, publish, distribute, adapt, modify the art works in all media of expression now known or later developed and in all languages, for any DoE purpose or any other purposes associated with public education, including but not limited to, reproducing and publishing the works for any other event, educational purpose or activity.
- Requests for permission to reproduce any of the artworks should be directed to Public Schools NSW Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing team, Arncliffe Office, cnr Segenhoe & Avenal St, Arncliffe NSW 2205.
This year again we are pleased to extend the Koori Art Expressions to schools for the entire Ultimo Operational Directorate. We are excited to extend the Koori Art Expressions to new schools participating and we look forward to seeing your artworks that you produce for the exhibition.
