SUNY University Faculty Senate 2011 Fall Plenary Meeting
October 20-21, 2011
Hosted by SUNY Purchase
Report of the Programs and Awards Committee
The Committee has communicated by email and will meet in November.
The following activities are receiving the committee’s attention:
1. Conversation in the Disciplines
The Committee will meet in May 2012 to formulate recommendations regarding which CID applicants will receive funding this year.
2. Technology/data transfer of data and award applications has been completed.
3. We expect to have CID funds for the second year of offering two new awards, one in Entrepreneurship and the other in Sustainability.
4. Develop additional ways to make the usefulness of CIDs more evident and long-lasting, and to integrate CIDs with the Chancellor’s strategic plan.
5. Promote the awards more vigorously and support the Chancellor’s goal of “celebrating” the awards for SUNY and for the individual campuses.
6. Continue to explore whether to make a recommendation for an expansion of the eligibility for consideration for the Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence to include more categories of professional titles found in Article II of the Policies of the Board of Trustees. If the committee recommends such changes, relevant changes in the Policies and Procedures would be needed.
7. The committee is working on construction of a new award for Emerging Scholars.
8. Role of faculty governance in leadership and faculty development.
9. The committee spoke with President O’Brien about inconsistency on some campuses with the nomination process for the Chancellor’s Awards, and the committee will draft a letter regarding this issue. President O’Brien suggested that this letter, or a similar one, could be sent from President O’Brien and Provost LaVallee to all campuses.
10. The committee will work on the implementation of leadership and faculty development initiatives and suggest ways that Governance leadership can assist System Administration in policy and practice for leadership and faculty development. The committee will work with its System Administration liaison to implement the Chancellor’s proposal of a Distinguished Academy to develop an organized program of service for all who hold the Distinguished Rank. The Programs and Awards Committee should be a central force in building policy on leadership. Committee members will study the Faculty Development Report and the SUNY Leadership reports and recommend ways to make our committee become integrally involved with both initiatives.
