L852 SPECIFICATION

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS

2.1 LED IN-PAVEMENT FIXTURE. The LED in-pavement fixture shall conform to the requirements of FAA Advisory Circular 150/5345-46 (current edition) “Specification for Runway and Taxiway Light Fixtures” and FAA Engineering Brief No. 67 (current edition) “Light Sources other than Incandescent and Xenon for Airport Lighting and Obstruction Lighting Fixtures.” The fixtures shall be ETL certified and listed in AC 150/5345-53B, Appendix 3 at the time of bid. The LED in-pavement fixtures shall be as manufactured by Eaton Crouse-Hinds or approved equal.

2.2 EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED. A quantity of {TBD} in-pavement fixtures shall be supplied. Each lot shipment shall include one Instruction Manual. The manufacturer shall also have a downloadable electronic version of the manual available on their web site. The {L-852A, L-852B, L-852C, L-852D, L-852J and L-852K} LED in-pavement fixture shall be Style 3 (£ ¼ inch above grade) and feature waterproof rating of IP68. The power supply shall be potted in the advent of water ingress. The overall depth of the in-pavement fixture must be no more than 3 inches below grade to provide extra space inside shallow bases. All components shall be corrosion proof without the use of environmentally hazardous metal protective coatings, such as cadmium plating. The prisms shall be field replaceable without the use of epoxy or other sealing compounds and held in place by the LED module without any additional screws or washers to attach it to the housing. Grommets, in conjunction with a mechanical clamping device, shall be used for the entry and sealing of L-823 cord set wire cables to the inner cover. This will allow for cord set replacement without the use of epoxy or other sealing compounds. A test port with removable plug will be provided in the bottom cover to allow for pressure testing after fixture overhaul. The fixture bottom cover shall include an earth ground terminal and a pressure fitting for leakage test

2.3 FIXTURE POWER. The fixture shall operate on any 3- or 5-step ferroresonant or thyristor CCR that is designed in compliance with FAA requirements specified in AC 150/5345-10(current edition) having its dimming curve compliant to the Engineering Brief 67D. It shall be possible to install the lights on existing circuits in addition to, or in replacement of, conventional incandescent or halogen lights without having to change any other element (CCR, primary and secondary cabling, series transformer, etc.). The fixture light output shall match quartz-incandescent fixtures at all brightness levels on a 3-step and 5-step regulator. The required beam color shall be obtained without the use of a color filter. In case of failure the of the LEDs the power supply must emulate fail open to allow compatibility to failure modes presented by Halogen technology ensuring existing control systems will identify lamp failure.

The LED fixtures should present a power factor greater than 0.99 at any CCR step and have no apparent change in power consumption when operating in conjunction with a non-sinusoidal CCR output wave. The total power consumption of each side of the LED fixture plus an internal power supply shall not exceed 9.5VA. When operating at lowest steps in a series CCR the LED fixture shall not flicker. The power supply should have a minimum DC PMW output of 400Hz to effectively reduce the perception of flicker while aircrafts move in high speeds.

The electronics should operate in temperatures from -40°C to +85°C (-40°F to +185°F) without any impact to its life expectancy and withstand RMS currents of 8.5A and repetitive peak currents of 25A. The power supply should also withstand CCR surge currents of magnitude of 250A and be equipped with lightning surge protection of 5kA/10kV.

The in-pavement fixture shall utilize a Light Emitting Diode (LED) light source with average projected lifetime of the LED greater than 50,000 hours at full brightness and power supply MTBF greater than 180,000 hours.

The fixtures should be compatible to monitoring devices having the power supplies failing in such way that can be detected by individual monitoring and controls devices in case of failure of the LEDs in short and open circuit and power supply internal failure.

When operating with CCR load monitoring the malfunctioning of power supplies shall be detected by change of inductance of phase shift enabling the ALCMS to generate maintenance alarms to airport personnel.

To minimize spare parts requirements, the fixture should bear a universal internal power supply circuit shall be the same for 3-step or 5-step series circuits and to any color LED being configured by simple jumpers.

An option for a heater shall be available for the fixture. To reduce overall energy consumption, the heater shall be thermostatically controlled. The temperature measurement point shall be obtained by any electronic element present in a subassembly that is close to the prism and has physical contact. The heater function has to provide enough heat to warm up the entire housing and prism and the heater has to be placed around the prism to avoid damage to the LEDs and Power Supply.

CONSTRUCTION METHODS

3.1 PLACING THE LED IN-PAVEMENT FIXTURE. The contractor shall furnish and install each L852 LED in-pavement fixture as specified in the proposal and shown in the plans. L852 LED in-pavement fixtures shall be mounted on industry standard FAA L-868 base cans as specified and shown by location on the plans.

3.2 TESTS. Each fixture shall be connected to the series circuit using the manufacturer’s recommended isolation transformer. The constant current regulator (CCR) shall then be tested to verify the correct output current is present at each step. The output current shall be checked with a True RMS meter using the CCR manufacturer’s instructions. The entire circuit shall then be fully tested by continuous operation for not less than 24 hours prior to acceptance.
