Joseph A. Vogrin, JR.
OBJECTIVE/ PROFILE
My primary interest is in consulting and/or short-term contract assignments where I can apply my extensive experience in thermal design and analysis or in systems engineering (thermal specialty). I have over 35 years experience in the design and management of thermal engineering projects associated with NASA and DOD spacecraft, which includes initial conceptual design through launch operations.
EXPERIENCE
11/2005 to Current: Legacy Engineering, Irvine, CA
- Consultant. Assigned to Northrop Grumman Space Technology Center (formerly TRW Systems), Redondo Beach, CA. Thermal consultant to Thermal Systems department which included the following: Prepared department document defining thermal engineering and test engineering responsibilities in setting up and running major satellite thermal vacuum tests; evaluated flight thermal data on AXAF/Chandra satellite Integrated Science Instrument Module to determine if mission life can be extended from the design life of 5 years to 15 years. Defined mission constraints to accommodate life extension to 15 years; performed thermal design analyses on JPL SIM project and other NGC projects. Utilized SINDA, Pre-SINDA, TRASYS, and TSS thermal programs; supported proposal thermal efforts for NASA Goddard Advanced TDRSS. On the design review committees for JWST program mechanical subsystem and for LCROSS program thermal subsystem. Support to NPOESS program preparing Thermal Design Criteria Document, and preparing an in-process (for manufacturing) thermal conductivity test procedure on state-of-the-art high thermally conductive Annealed Pyrolytic Graphite Thermal Doublers.
1969 to 1999: TRW Systems, Redondo Beach, CA
- 1995 to 1999: Thermal Systems Oversight Of Ball Aerospace Contract on AXAF Program. Responsible for the TRW oversight task from a thermal systems and thermal design point of view of the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) built by Ball Aerospace. Task included thermal interface coordination with science instrument thermal engineers and MSFC customer to ensure thermal compatibility between the ISIM and the science instruments and with the rest of the AXAF components (e.g. telescope). Task also included review, preparation, and inputs to the various systems documentation from a thermal point of view. Participated in thermal vacuum testing at the ISIM level and at the AXAF observatory level. Participated in launch preparations.
- 1977 to 1995: Leader of Thermal Technical Staff (2 years); Thermal Subsytem Manager for TDRS Flights 1 through 7. Responsible for all thermal portions of the TDRS program, including direction of 7 thermal engineers, thermal cost and schedule control, multi-layer insulation (MLI) development and fabrication, thermal development testing, and spacecraft qualification and acceptance testing for 7 TDRS satellites. Participated in system thermal interfacing activities with customer (NASA Goddard), space shuttle community, and sub-contractors. Supported launches and ground support activities for all 7 satellites from a thermal systems point of view.
- 1985 to 1987: Senior Staff Engineer. Responsible for thermal design of classified program. Performed thermal design analyses on this program during down time on the TDRS program following the Challenger shuttle disaster.
- 1975 to 1977: Member of Thermal Technical Staff/ Systems Engineer. Responsible for the thermal design including thermal analyses and testing of the Pioneer Venus Gas Chromatograph instrument. Duties included system engineering roll including development of the test procedures for all testing of the qualification and flight instruments including vibration, acceleration, thermal, and system performance testing of the instrument.
- 1974 to 1975: Member of the Technical Staff. Performed thermal design analyses and testing of the Viking Biology instrument. Developed the test procedures and participated in the in-process thermal testing of the various modules which included heat pipes, thermo-electric coolers, and numerous proportionally controlled heaters.
- 1971 to 1974: Member of the Technical Staff. Performed on-orbit thermal design analyses for a classified project. Responsible for the thermal analyses and design of a variable conductance heat pipe/radiator system. Activities included thermal development test of the heat pipe/radiator system and participation in the development of the process specifications for the manufacture of the flight hardware. Activities also included technical responsibility for the thermal model testing of the total spacecraft.
- 1969 to 1971: Member of the Technical Staff. Performed thermal design analyses of electronic units.
1966 to 1969: McDonnell Douglas, Huntington Beach, CA
- Scientist Specialist. Performed on-orbit thermal design analysis tasks and provided technical support for testing. Duties included interfacing with the Air Force, aerospace, and other contractors associated with the program relative to thermal interfaces. Provided technical support for the development of computer programs: radiation interchange factor and thermal analyzer programs.
1965 to 1966: TRW Systems, Redondo Beach, CA
- Member of the Technical Staff. Performed on-orbit and re-entry thermal design analysis tasks and provided technical support for thermal vacuum testing on VASP satellite and BTL re-entry vehicle.
1963 to 1965: North American Aviation, Downey, CA
- Senior Engineer. Performed re-entry thermal design analyses on Project Apollo.
