About Mrs. McDermitt

Hello! It is hard to believe that this is my fifth year teaching in Aurora. Previous to this year, I taught 7th grade math, 7th grade science, and 8th grade math. My Bachelor’s degree is from Walsh University and my Master’s degree is from Kent State University. In my free time, I enjoy golfing, playing softball and basketball, and spending time with my family and friends. I am looking forward to another positive school year and meeting everyone throughout the year.

About Mrs. Jenkins

Hello! I am beginning my 6th year as an interventionist. My undergraduate degree is from The University of Akron in Family and Child Development. I earned my Master’s degree in Education, Intervention Specialist K-12 from Ursuline College. My husband and I both grew up in and graduated from the Aurora City Schools and are raising our children here. We have two children, Allison, 15 and Zachary, 13. I look forward to working with your children this year!

About Ms. Bennett

Hello! My name is Ms. Bennett and for the next six weeks I will be your student teacher in 7th grade math. I am very excited to be working with each and every one of you. I attend Kent State University for Middle Childhood Education with concentrations in Mathematics and Language Arts and I am scheduled to graduate this upcoming December. In my free time I like to shop, read and lately I have been doing a lot of wedding planning. I grew up right down the road in Mantua and graduated from Crestwood Schools in 2007. Currently I live with my Fiancé, Brian, and our two cats, Huey and Tigger. Starting Monday August 27th I will be in the classroom if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to approach me!

Class Description

Welcome to math and the 7th grade! This year we will be looking at a variety of new topics and many that build upon last year’s learning. The Connected Mathematics 2 textbook series will continue as our core text as it is directly aligned with Ohio’s Academic Content Standards. The following are some of the topics that will be explored throughout the year:

  • Linear Relationships
  • The Pythagorean Theorem
  • Ratios and Proportions
  • Integers and Rational Numbers
  • Three-Dimensional Measurement
  • Probability and Expected Value
  • Variables, Tables, and Graphs
  • Data and Statistics

Grading

65% - Summative Assessments

20% - Formative Assessments

15% - Homework & Classwork

Homework

Homework will be assigned almost every night Monday through Thursday. There will be a larger assignment given on Friday called “Homework of the Week” (H.O.W.). H.O.W. will be due on the following Friday. This allows students to plan ahead and do the bulk of their homework on nights that are the most convenient. Short nightly assignments may also be given, but they will not be as time consuming. All assignments are given to either support/reinforce current class work, or to review valuable concepts. Homework should be completed neatly and on-time. Students are required to SHOW ALL WORK in the form of calculations, pictures, organized tables, and/or written explanations. Homework that is late will result in a deduction of the grade and the student will be required to complete the assignment during recess.

Intervention

Math intervention is offered daily during the recess period (non-eating time of lunch). This is a time for students to get small group or individualized assistance. Students may choose to come-in but will be assigned to come in as needed per classroom teacher recommendations. We use formative assessments to determine student understanding of current classroom topics. Thursday’s math intervention is focused on homework help.
