Updates and changes
Newscan. The CEDROM product acquired via Knowledge Ontario is a package that consists of Ontario and Quebec newspapers. We already had a package, formerly called Virtual News Library, that consisted of Atlantic provinces and Quebec newspapers. When it came time to renew our existing package with CEDROM, we were shocked at the pricing. There was considerable back and forth with the company, with the result that we retained the Chronicle Herald only from our former package, to supplement the package coming via Knowledge Ontario.
GPO. This product has been discontinued by Ovid. We have not yet found another source for it.
Lexis Nexis. We have cancelled the original version of Lexis Nexis that we’ve held for many years, effective the end of July, as we are satisfied that Lexis Nexis Academic fulfils the needs.
Trials:
Bibliography of English Women Writers 1500-1640 (via Iter)

Over 600 new fulltext titles were added this month.
Other
Muler. I continue to test Muler and work with Tuan regarding the functionality requirements.
JSTOR weeding. The usual summer project has been completed in Scott and is underway in the branches. 3989 print volumes were withdrawn from Scott. In addition to this, the items that were put in storage over all the years that we have been removing print, have been “domtared”. This represented about 72,000 print vols.(40 boxes x 60 skids x 30 vols per box). Samdai undertook the assignment to update all of the Sirsi records: removing the storage holdings and items. This involved reviewing almost 1500 titles in the catalog. Thank you Samdai!
Serial cancellations. After a year with the CRKN product ALPSP (via Swetswise), we went ahead and cancelled any print subscriptions also held with Swets, 110 in total. We also cancelled 100 other print subscriptions, most of which are now online. Patti Ryan did a review of her REFPER list and identified 8 titles for cancellation. The total savings on this cancellation project is $113,000. Thanks to Alla for all her work in completing this project.
Scott Reference periodicals. Patti Ryan identified several serial runs to be transferred to the stacks and others to be weeded. Again, thanks to Alla for doing this project.
013 weeding. Patti also identified a long run of serial holdings to be weeded from 013. Thanks to Paul Harrison for taking care of this.
HNES serials. I was given a list of items classed in A, to review against other library holdings per the Thunder Bay Agreement, and identified what could be weeded. I am waiting a decision on this.
Allocations. All of the new allocations for the fiscal 2010 have been input in Sirsi.
Tour. I met with Meghan Ecclestone and gave her a tour.
Coursepacks. Following a meeting that was held with Patricia Lynch from the Bookstore, I again did some considerable work on identifying products for which the licensing allows course packs. Patricia indicated that there was a savings of $50,000 so far, as fees did not have to paid for providing journal articles in the course packs.
Donations. Marion, Rubina and Teresa all processed an abundance of serial donations this month. Rob received a long run of RPM – thanks to Teresa for processing these!
