Arsenic Mitigation Project

  1. Title of the Project: Drinking Water Supply through Pipeline from Dug Well and Idara in Arsenic Affected Villages in Bangladesh (Wilson Phase-iv)
  2. Aim of the Project: To develop a sustainable and affordable community based piped water supply from Dug Well and Idara to mitigate the arsenic problem in target areas.
  3. Objective of the Project
  • To provide publicly accessible safe and arsenic free water for drinking and cooking to all communities with more than 80% of their wells affected by arsenic
  • To ensure community ownership of operation and maintenance of options.
  • To ensure safe water quality.

  3. Project Period: 6 Months (June’05 to December’05) will be covered more than five thousand population

  1. Project Target: DCH plans to install 4 Improve New dug well with pipeline network and 1 Idara renovation with pipeline network in the Phase-4 (June’05 – Dec’05). That will lead to the provision of safe water supplies to all the communities in the Upazilla, which are 80% or more affected. During the phase-4 total option will cover 490 families and 2940 population approximately.

9.1 Water Quality Test

After installation of dug well sixteen water parameters will be tested one time according to UNICEF and DPHE guideline. These are fluoride, iron, manganese, nitrate, pH, chloride etc. Feacal coliform will be tested monthly basis. Arsenic tested will be in SOES Kalkata, BUET Dhaka and MSUK Kustia. Arsenic will be tested 2 months periodical basis.

9.2 Training of Caretaker and User

Experienced DCH trainers will train caretakers and users of options. Bangla version of training manual will be provided. Tests will be taken for evaluation of training.

10. Monitoring

Project activities will be monitored by DCH through observations, checklists, open interview etc. DCH engineer will monitor implementation activities. Water quality will be tested in DCH, SOES Kalkata, MSUK Kustia and BUET.
