Measuring With Water
Supplies:
1 liquid measuring cup
Measuring Spoons
Dry measuring cups
1 pitcher of water
Teacher Demo:
As the teacher when introducing measuring you will need to help the students understand the importance of measuring liquid ingredients with a liquid measuring cup and dry with a dry measuring cup.
You will need 2 student volunteers for this example.
1st student will fill the dry 1 cup measuring cup with water
2nd students will fill the liquid measuring cup to the 1 cup line. (Teach the students to get down at eye level to see that they do not over fill the cup)
Next, give each student a 1 Tbs. and have them continue to add water to their individual measuring cups until the dry measuring cup overfills. If it does not over fill then have the students walk back to their desks without spilling the water.

Measuring Practice Relay
Go into your kitchen lab and gather the following measuring equipment.
Measuring spoons
Liquid Measuring cup
Dry measuring cup
Number each person in your kitchen group 1-4.
When the teacher says go please do the following. (The next student is not allowed to start until the student before them is sitting down.)
- Measure 1 cup of flour at the teacher demo area and get checked off before returning to your kitchen
- Measure ½ cup sugar at the teacher demo area and get checked off before returning to your kitchen.
- Measure 1 Tbs. vanilla at the teacher demo area and get checked off before returning to your kitchen.
- Measure ¾ cup brown sugar and get checked off before returning to your kitchen.
When all members of your group are finished, wash, dry and put away all the measuring equipment. Then one student will go back to the teacher demo area and announce being finished.
