WTS Los Angeles Area Chapter High School Scholarships
Background and Application Instructions
The WTS (previously known as Women’s Transportation Seminar), Los Angeles Area Chapter has three high school scholarships available to encourage female high school students to pursue careers in transportation. The scholarships are:
- Joan G. Wood Memorial High School Scholarship
- PB Marty Rubin Memorial Scholarship
- Marilyn Reese High School Scholarship
The scholarships are described below and are open to applicants from the following schools:

Women’s Transportation Seminar - Los Angeles Area Chapter
Joan G. Wood Memorial High School Scholarship - $1,500
The Joan G. Wood High School Scholarship was established in 2005 by the WTS, Los Angeles Area Chapter to encourage female high school students to pursue careers in transportation. The Joan G. Wood High School Scholarship is in the amount of $1,500.
This scholarship honors Joan G. Wood, who actively served as a WTS member from 2001 to 2005. She was dedicated to her role as WTS Mentor and Co-Chair of the WTS-LA Adopt-A-School Program. As transportation Planning Manager with Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and previously a Project Manager with the State of California, Department of Transportation, Ms. Wood enjoyed working on urban planning and development projects. Ms. Wood also cherished her family and spending time nourishing new friendships.
PB Marty Rubin Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
The PB Marty Rubin Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by the WTS, Los Angeles Area Chapter (WTS-LA) to encouragehigh school students to pursue careers in transportation. The PB Marty Rubin Memorial Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000.
Marty Rubin was a legend in transportation. As Chairman-Emeritus and an employee at Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) for 48 years, he was known as a visionary, a master builder of communities and a man for whom people always came first. Marty Rubin passed away in May of 2006, but his legacy continues at PB and within the memory of the people who knew him best. To celebrate the inclusive and zestful spirit of Marty, PB has decided to create an annual scholarship in his name --The PB Marty Rubin Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will be given to a deserving female senior student at any of the high schools participating in the WTS-LA Adopt-A-Schools Program. It is relevant that the schools are located in the greater Los Angeles area where Marty led the way to achieve greater mobility and accessibility for the region -- while preserving neighborhoods and their traditions.
Marilyn J. Reese High School Scholarship - $1,000
The Marilyn J. Reese High School Scholarship was established by the WTS, Los Angeles Area Chapter (WTS-LA) to encourage high school students to pursue careers in transportation. The Marilyn Reese High School Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000.
The scholarship honors Marilyn J. Reese, a pioneering role model for women in the transportation industry. Marilyn J. Reese was a Caltrans engineer responsible for designing the I-10 / I-405 interchange and the first female in California to receive her P.E. license.
Minimum Qualifications Criteria for all three scholarships
The minimum criteria for selection are as follows:
a)Open to female graduating senior high school students at any of the high schools located within the greater Los Angeles area participating in the WTS-LA Adopt-A-Schools Program.
b)GPA of 2.75 or higher
c)Plans to pursue a career in transportation-related field, such as transportation, engineering, planning, finance or logistics, public relations, or environmental science
d)Full completion of the High School Scholarship Application
Application Instructions
Applications must be completed in full and submitted on time. Include: 1) Application form, 2) Student transcript, 3) Personal essay, and 4) a Letter of Recommendation from an educator who can speak to your abilities and drive.
Please submitall application materials in .pdf format with the Student’s Name and School in subject heading to . Rename and Save the application materials with the student’s name in the title. If possible, we prefer that you submit the materials as on combined .pdf. Save your applications materials using the following naming protocol:

- Recommendation: Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, school counselor, or community leader who can speak to your intellectual strengths, leadership, and dedication. The letter of recommendation should indicatethe title of the recommender, their relationship to the applicant, and their assessment of the applicant’s strengths. (Recommendations from family members or friends are not acceptable.)
V.Essay: Write a typed one-page essay discussing your college and career goals as they relate to a transportation-related field of study. What kind of impact would you like to make in the world through transportation? Do you have an innovative transportation idea that can change the world? Feel free to mention any special experiences that inspired you to pursue studies in a transportation-related field.
