Grade 5

State Keynote

Essential Question: What important and interesting facts can you learn about your assigned state?

Tasks: Students will first research their assigned state with a partner from another class using a teacher created template and books from the library. The partners will use the information they find to create a bilingual four-slide keynote.

Standards: 5.9 Students know the location of the current 50 states and the names of their capitals.

Interactions: I paired my students with another student from the bilingual fifth grade class. They worked together to find information in a bilingual book with information about their state. Using the teacher created template, they researched the information that they would later use in the state keynote. The students in the bilingual class were responsible for the Spanish part of the keynote and the students in my class were responsible for the English part of the keynote. When they found all the information, we went to the computer lab and each partnership used one computer. I would model for them how each slide should look and what information should be on each one as well.

Situations: The classes met on Wednesdays from 1:20 until 2:15 for three weeks in my classroom to research the information. Once all the information was collected, we met in the computer lab on Wednesdays from 1:20 until 2:15 to begin creating a keynote. The project took about 6 weeks to complete.

Assessment: Once the keynotes were created, I saved all the projects onto a flash drive and on to my computer. I looked for basic information they found from the research they did. I also looked to see if any groups added any special effects that we had discussed in class (ex: color, pictures, transitions)

Tools: Students will need the teacher created template with questions, pencils, state books, and computers.
