ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
October 20, 2011
The Bibb County Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) Advisory Board met on Thursday, October 20, 2011, 11:30 a.m., in Room 1029 at Hutchings Career Center. After Hutchings’Culinary Arts students provided lunch for members, Chairperson, Donald Rhodes, called the meeting to order at 11:52 a.m. Members were given the opportunity to introduce themselves and Becky Lee (Central Georgia Technical College/CGTC) extended an invitation to the virtual town hall meeting on workforce development being hosted tonight at CGTC in “Building A” at 6:30 p.m. Packets which included agendas, May 11, 2011 meeting minutes, committee comment forms, and pathway bookletswere distributed prior to the start of the meeting.
The following members were present: Allyson Aldrich (Retired Counselor/Early Childhood Education Instructor), Charles Baima (BOE/Hutchings), MaryBeth Francine Barnes (BOE/Youth Apprenticeship), Bill Chambless (GA Associated General Contractors), Dr. Russ Chesser (BOE/Hutchings), Susanne Griffin-Ziebart (BOE/Deputy Superintendent), Lonnicia Jackson (Miller-Motte Technical College), Dr. Sharon Joyner (BOE/CTAE), Becky Lee (Central Georgia Technical College), Judy McCallum (BOE/CTAE), Teresa Phillips (BOE/Rutland), Donald Rhodes (Consultant), Meredith Rosser (Geico), Bob Thompson (GA Dept. of Labor), Dr. Cassandra Washington (BOE/Westside), and Cassandra Williams (Medical Center of Central Georgia). Guests in attendance were Leigh Bryan (BOE/Howard), and Dr. Mike Moye (President, Central GA Technical College).
Mr. Rhodes asked for a motion to approve the Minutes from the last advisory meeting held on May 11, 2011. Bill Chambless made the motion and Meredith Rosser made a second. The minutes were unanimouslyapproved by the committee.
Dr. Joyner discussed with the committee the Perkins five-year Compliance Review that took place on September 29, 2011. There were 40 team members who evaluated all seven high schools and one middle school in Bibb. The teams included educators from surrounding counties, GA Department of Education personnel, and retired educators. Dr. Joyner presented an overview of the CTAE Department that was shared with team membersduring the Compliance Review. A copy of the PowerPoint presentation is attached. She then relayed of one of the comments made by a member of the review team during the exit report regarding the CTAE Advisory Board. The team member commented on the obvious involvement and support of the active committee in goal setting and plans for Bibb’s CTAE department and students. Dr. Joyner expects to receive a written report from the review team by the end of this semester. The report will be used along with Advisory Board input to establish a long-range plan.
The next item on the agenda was Articulation Agreements presented by Charles Baima, CTAE Supervisor. Mr. Baima discussed the articulation meeting that was held last spring at Central GA Technical College resulting in articulation agreements between Bibb Schools and CGTC. Bibb has 31 high school courses that articulate with CGTC courses. Posters were designed which list the articulated courses, and they were placed in Bibb’s classrooms where the articulated courses are taught. Mr. Baima displayed one of the posters for the advisory board to view.
MaryBeth Barnes, Youth Apprenticeship (YAP) Coordinator, discussed CTAE Student of the Year plans. Each school will choose one CTAE student to compete for Bibb County’s CTAE Student of the Year. Students will be chosen based on their GPA and coursework, essay on how CTAE has affected their future plans, and their personal interview. The top three students will receive CTAE scholarships. An awardsprogram will be held in February at Hutchings Career Center where the Student of the Year will be announced.
Dr. Cassandra Washington, CTAE Supervisor, talked about the first Mock Interview Fair that was held last year at Howard High School. Prior to the fair, students were taught how to properly complete an application, resume, and practice appropriate interview etiquette. The fair affords students the opportunity to practice a critical skill. Bob Thompson (GA Dept of Labor) participated in the interviews last year and mentioned how encouraged he was by the students interviewed; and Meredith Rosser (Geico) also had colleagues who participated in the interview process. This school year, Howard, Hutchings, and Westside High Schools will offer this opportunity to CTAE students. Dr. Washington asked for volunteers to conduct these interviews.
Teresa Phillips, CTAE Supervisor, gave an overview of the Industry Certificationprocess mentioning that when a program becomes industry certified, it receives a “Stamp of Excellence” which represents the height of program quality. Programs that obtain industry certification have successfully undergone rigorous reviews from members of business and industry and associations that they represent. The programs that are currently industry certified in Bibb are Construction at Westside; Business Education at Central, Northeast, and Hutchings; Graphic Communications at Howard; Marketing Education at Central, Northeast, Westside, Howard, and Rutland; and Automotive at Hutchings. Programs undergoing the Industry Certification process this year are Broadcast Video at Central; Plant Science/Horticulture at Northeast; Construction at Southwest; Automotive at Hutchings (re-certifying); and Culinary Arts at Hutchings. At the end of Bibb’s current 5-year plan (FY2014) all CTAE programs will be industry certified.
Susanne Griffin-Ziebart, Deputy Superintendent of School Improvement and Redesign, gave an update on Strategic Planning in Bibb. Two full days of strategic planning have taken place in Bibb with 4,300 individuals taking part including all employees, community leaders, and parents. Input from key stakeholders was obtained. Two more strategic planning days are scheduled in November and December. The upcoming planning days will take place at the school sites. The information collected included theme-based interests. It was noted that students should learn skills of interest for work. CTAE has forged the way with employers to develop opportunities for students’ maximum success. Bibb needs a strong strategic plan with a strong focus on instruction.
Bob Thompson, GA Department of Labor, distributed hand-outs and gave an overview of the Middle Georgia Area Labor Profile. He also provided unemployment figures in our area. Bibb’s labor department serves Bibb, Jones, Twiggs, and Monroe counties.
In her closing remarksDr. Joyner asked committee members to complete the Committee Comment forms and give suggestions for pathways to be considered in Bibb as part of our strategic planning process. Primary consideration is to offer programs leading to careers which are in high demand. The form is attached below and can be completed and e-mailed to Judy or faxed to 478-779-2544 (if you have not already submitted the form).
Members were thanked for their attendance and input at today’s meeting. The meeting was adjournedby Mr. Rhodes at 12:44 p.m.
