Searching the UDM Library Catalog
The UDM library catalog has brief information on books, videos, print journal titles (not article titles), books on tape and other materials owned by the library.
1.)Go to the library webpage ( the "Books & eBooks" tab in center of the page. Click on the "UDM Catalog Home" link under the search box.
- If you know the exact author, title, or ISBN, do a basic search (don’t worry about capitalizing or using punctuation).
You’ll get the closest alphabetical match to your search. If the author is not in the list, we probably don’t own any of their work.
- Click on the author’s name to see which of their works the library owns.
- The most recent titles are listed first. Notice the location (collection and call number) and status of the item that interests you.
- You can click on the “Add to my list” buttons to keep a running list of titles that interest you. Click on the “My List” link at the top when you have finished searching to see the titles you added.
- Click on a title to see more information, including subject headings.
- Click on a subject to find more books on the same topic.
If you don’t have an exact title or author, try a subject or keyword search.
-Subject searches are specific, so you’ll get books that are focused on your subject, but it’s not always easy to guess the LC Subject heading. If you can’t find a relevant subject, or you don’t get enough hits, try a keyword search.
-Keyword searches are broader than subject searches—they find items with the search terms in the title, subject, contributors, contents, notes, and summary fields. However, you may get many items that are unrelated to your topic. If so, look at the subject headings of a few items that fit your topic, and search by subject.
- Try a subject search.
- To get more results, try a keyword search.
- You can also use truncation or synonyms to get more results.
- To narrow your results, click on a pertinent title to see the subject headings.
- You can also add terms to narrow a search.
- Try an advanced search, where you search for keywords in different fields or limit the types of materials (books on tape, videos, etc…)
