Online classes are convenient and can be very productive. However, since you don’t actually see the instructor or your fellow students, you may have to make changes in how you study and complete the assignments. Here are several points that will help you succeed in any online class.

MANAGE YOUR TIME

More than a face-to-face class, time management is critical. If you are working during the day and/or have family responsibilities, create a schedule that allows you plenty of time for rest so that you are alert and not distracted when you sit down to study for your class. Create a schedule for reading, assignments, and projects. Ensure you have scheduled some free time to allow for emergencies.

UNDERSTAND WHAT IS EXPECTED

Get any required textbooks at least a week before the class and review them. If your class has a Moodle or Blackboard component, go online as soon as you can to familiarize yourself with the structure of the class. Look at any links or other references shown on the class web site to become comfortable with the site and the class before it begins.

SCHEDULE

Review the class syllabus and create a course calendar to note due dates, assignments, and upcoming tests or projects. In an online class, there are no face-to-face class meetings so you must make the time in your personal schedule to do the class work. Set short-term goals for each day or week to ensure you will be on time with each assignment.

USE MESSAGE BOARDS

In most online classes, forums or discussion boards take the place of class participation in a face-to-face class. Make a habit of checking these boards at least once each day. Respond to questions and comments from both the instructor and other students on these forums. Posting to a discussion board is quick and easy, and many times, is a large part of your grade in the class. Using these tools can help you understand the material, receive answers to questions, and even learn new tips. Your postings should be pertinent to the class and not just a quick “I agree”.

STAY IN TOUCH

Check your email and any other web site that pertains to the class regularly. Plan on logging in at least three times each week to review the message boards, check for new assignments, see any comments from both the instructor and your classmates, and maintain contact with the class. Contact your instructor to ask any question or to ask for help. Most instructors will do all that they can to ensure you understand the material.

STAY CURRENT

Make sure that your assignments are submitted on time. If you do not understand an assignment, check with the instructor well before the due date. In many online classes, there is no chance for makeup work.

STUDY AND READ

Use good study habits- turn off the MP3 player or the TV. Read actively and take good notes. Review the material often to ensure you are retaining what you learn.

MOTIVATE YOURSELF

Remind yourself each day why you are taking college classes and what you intend to accomplish. Working by oneself can be daunting and it is easy to ignore class work when life is “happening”. Reward yourself after a difficult assignment by taking a walk or renting a movie. You CAN succeed and the advantages of online classes can help you achieve your goals.
