SUBJECT:Invitation toFaculty to Participate in the BUILD Program (NIH 1UL1MD009601, 1RL5MD009593, and 1TL4MD009631)

BUILD is a student-training programfunded by the Common Fund of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The program goal is to enhance the size and diversity of the NIH research funded workforce by recruiting and providingtraining opportunities to undergraduate students (particularly those from groupsunderrepresentedin the Biomedical research workforce)leading to their PhD and a successful Biomedical research career. We invite interested faculty research mentors from CSULB and our BUILD Research Partner institutions (UC Irvine, USC, and the Long Beach VA Medical Center) to apply to become BUILD Research Mentors providingCSULB BUILD trainees with inspiration, encouragement, and an excellent research experience.

While we seek a diverse array of mentors, research topics, and laboratory styles, the mentored research of BUILD-funded students must be biomedical in nature. Biomedical research includes basic, applied, and translational approaches to studying health issues facing our communities and nation.Faculty members across a number of disciplines (e.g., engineering and the behavioral, biological, clinical, public health, physical, and social sciences) conduct biomedical research. The BUILD Research Enrichment and Student Training Directors welcome discussions with interested faculty on the fit of their research projects for the BUILD program. Please e-mail questions to .

In addition to working with students who are being trained in the BUILD learning community and in research focused courses to be successful in research careers, BUILD trainees bring with them modest supply money to support their research work, and travel money to support presentation of their research work at professional meetings. The BUILD Program website will post web links or brief descriptions of the BUILD Research Mentors’ specific BUILD research projects to facilitate recruiting of BUILD students to your research program. Of course we also encourage you to send students to apply to become BUILD Trainees.
