YOUNG LEADER REGISTRATION
Although they work within a Unit, Young Leaders may feel isolated in guiding. There will be lots of youngsters and several adult Leaders, but often only one YL. For this reason the role of the YL Leader was created, usually at Division level, to act as a point of contact and arrange group meetings for YLs to get together locally. However in practise we don’t manage to have YL meetings. The YL Registration Form was designed so that all who need to know about a YL in order to support her guiding have the information they need.
• The Unit Leader ensures that her Young Leadercompletes a Young Leader Registration Form (downloaded from the County website). This is in addition to asking the District Commissioner to change the YL’s role on Go! if she is already a member of guiding. If she is not already a member she will need to go through Join Us and also be given a copy of the leaflet "Starting The Senior Section" for the Unit/family exchange of personal information, special needs, photo permission, etc. This leaflet can be downloaded from:
• The YL signs the form, then her parent/carer so that they are aware of the commitment and that their daughter/ward will receive communication from guiding locally and nationally.
• The Unit Leader signsto confirm that she accepts the responsibility for ‘training’ her YL.
• The District Commissioner (or person carrying out that role) signs it so that she knows that there is a YL in that Unit who will need to be supported in that role.
• The District Commissioner checks that the relevant information is processed (through Join Us if necessary) on Go!
• The YL Registration Form is then passed to the local YL Leader or (local commissioner).
• It is noted that the local YL Leader will need to keep a copy of the YL contact details as she does not have the required access to Go! to look things up, but she must be aware that any such personal information held should be minimal and kept securely.
YOUNG LEADER QUALIFICATION
The syllabus for the Young Leader Qualification is in the Senior Section area of the Girlguiding website at The syllabus can be downloaded with supporting information, and progress can be signed off in the “Look Wider and More Record Book” from Trading Service. The YL Qualification is almost the same as Modules 1 and 2 of the (Adult) Leadership Qualification and there is a checklist on the website to show how they overlap. The LQ Mentor will take the YL Qualification into account as prior learning for the (Adult) Leadership Qualification (if it is undertaken within three years of completion of the YL Qualification). Also, if the YL moves away to continue guiding elsewhere the record on Go! is proof of her achievement.
• If the YL wishes to do Young Leader Qualification she should discuss it with her Unit Leader, local YL Leader/ District Commissioner.
• Assessment is by anyone appropriate to the activity involved – the Unit Leader, YL Leader, members taking part in the activity, etc.
• When the Qualification is completed the District Commissioner approves it.
• Once approved the DC sends the record book with evidence to the County Young Leader Adviser. (If there is not a County YL Adviser the record book should be sent to the County LQ Coordinator).
• The County YL Adviser (LQ Coordinator) passes details (name, Unit and District of the YL and date of award) to the County Office to request a badge and certificate.
• The County Young Leader Adviser (LQ Coordinator) returns the record book/evidence to the YL.
• The County Office will send a Certificate and Badge to the local Commissioner for presenting to the YL and record the YL Qualification on Go!
