The Office of Grants and Sponsored Research (OGSR) would like to welcome everyone back from the winter recess and wishes the entire SJU community a happy new year. The OGSR is a full-service sponsored programs office, dedicated to assisting University faculty and administrators with grant proposals and projects. The office assists in: identification of appropriate funding opportunities, preparation of complete and responsive grant proposals, regulatory compliance issues, negotiation of agreements and contracts and establishing sub-contractual arrangements with other universities, labs and hospitals.

The OGSR would like to welcome Nika Gueci to St. John’s University. Ms. Gueci will be assuming the position of Grants Specialist. For the last two years, Nika acquired grant management experience through her role as deputy director at the CUNY Institute for Health Equity, an organization dedicated to eliminating disparities in NYC and beyond. Nika began her work in grant and research administration at the Wellness, Alcohol, and Violence Education program while also studying toward her master’s degree in communication studies at New Mexico State University.

2014 GRANT MENTORING PROGRAM
The OGSR recently announced the second annual Grants Mentoring Program. The timeline of activities is as follows:
· February 1, 2014: Abstract Proposals must be submitted to the Dean’s Office for review.
· March 1, 2014: Stipend recipients will be selected and announced.
· April/May, 2014 (Dated TBD): The OGSR will hold select workshops for stipend recipients.
· Summer 2014 (month TBD): Grant Writing Consultant workshop session.
· After the allotted summer month preparations, the window to submit a full proposal to an external sponsor will be open up to December 15, 2014. No proposals can be submitted after this date.

WOMEN in SCIENCE
St. John’s University is one of thirteen designated educational institutions to receive funds from the Henry Luce Foundation. Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987) enjoyed a career that spanned seven decades and numerous professional interests including journalism, politics, the theater, and diplomacy. Under the terms of her will, Mrs. Luce established a legacy that benefits women with talent and ambition in areas where they continue to be underrepresented.
St. John’s University, which awarded Mrs. Luce an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 1964, was designated, in her will, as one of the beneficiaries of the Clare Boothe Luce Fund. With support from the fund, as one of its directives, the University has established the Clare Boothe Luce Scholarship program for undergraduate students, which provides full tuition and fees for the recipients. The objective of this program is to encourage women to enter, study, graduate and prepare for careers in teaching and research in science and technological fields in which they have historically been underrepresented.

In addition, the Luce fund supports Graduate Fellowships. This year three graduate students will receive research stipends as they continue their education:

Ummea Urmi (BS ’13, SJU Toxicology) MS student in Toxicology
