New Business

Renee Summers introduced our speaker, Rebecca Larson-Troyer from the Barberton Public Library. Ms. Larson-Troyer gave a presentation about Ohio Native Peoples, specifically people of this region. President Summers presented the Barberton Library with two of our Green Our Heritage, Our Home books.

Mr. Lawrence Gabrick shared his arrowhead collection and told a little about what he thought the uses were. He noted how smooth some were and how they fit into a hand.

President Summers also shared a collection of arrowheads from Mr. Dale Brott’s personal collection which was given to him by Pauline Franks.

Staci Schweikert reported that new information is being posted to the website as it is discovered. Members should check the site for current information.

Bob Vatilla tendered his resignation as Vice President, but promised to remain active with GHS. President Summers reminded the group that a vote for a new Vice President will need to occur at the next meeting.

President Summers then asked BJ Hutchison, chairman of the Historic Preservation Committee, to give a report on his committee. Mary Lou Williams raised a concern about the name of the committee. A short discussion of the name and tasks of the committee ensued. It was determined that an order of business for the committee will be to determine a more fitting name for the committee. Mr. Hutchison reported that he has communicated with all of the members of the committee and the committee will be meeting as a group shortly to determine a focus and direction for the committee.

There was no correspondence to discuss.

Meeting minutes for the February 18, 2010, meeting were emailed to all members who have an email address. Additional copies were available at the meeting for those who do not have an email address. A motion was made by Amy Nichols to adopt the February 18, 2010 minutes. The motion was seconded by Bob Vatilla. Minutes were adopted.

Old Business

President Summers reported that an updated call list is available.

President Summers then reported that the officers met last week to discuss business matters in an effort to speed up our group meetings. President Summers reported that the Membership Application has been changed to reflect minor clarifications to the categories of membership.

President Summers reported that the paperwork necessary to complete our 501(c)(3) status with the IRS is almost complete. To complete this paperwork, a Board of Directors had to be named. The initial Board of Directors will be BJ Hutchison, Bob Hutchison, Suzanne Ridgeway, Renee Summers, Sharon Haydu, and Staci Schweikert. Once the Board of Directors signatures have been collected, President Summers will file the paperwork.

President Summers then opened a discussion about the Easter Egg Hunt at Boettler Park. GHS will open the Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse during the egg hunt and distribute treats. Amy Nichols suggested that we have an egg and spoon race, which was a traditional Easter activity. Renee Summers, Amy Nichols, and Staci Schweikert will prepare for the event.

Staci Schweikert asked if there was an update from the HPC about the Southgate project since City Council was voting to pursue funding for renovations to Southgate. No one had an update on the Southgate project since HPC has not met since December.

Don Sample asked if anyone was aware that the swails along Greensburg Road (East of Steese) and Arlington Road (near Nimisilia by Weavers Pond) were WPA projects. Mr. Sample indicated that the swails were in need of maintenance. It was agreed that research about the swails and othe WPA projects in Green should be done. It was also noted that the swails were refered to as the Dickerhoff Ditches.

The next meeting will be April 15, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the John Torok Senior Center. Jim Summers made the motion to adjoin the meeting at 9:00. Don Sample seconded the motion.

Respectfully submitted,

Staci Schweikert
