Minutes: October 16, 2012 Minutes Approved
Speaker: Mark Gazdik:
Brief overview on athletics projects—more “student focused” than we have ever been at Wright State. You will see the majority of this focus and men and women’s basketball games. Really want to make an effort that students will come out to games and have a good time.
· more promotion on campus
· convey the message that students can use their Wright 1 card to get tickets to all of the games for free
· First exhibition games: November 1st (women) and November 2nd (men) both at 7:00 in the Nutter Center. Enter at gate 9!
· Regular Season: November 14th for women; November 16th for men. At this game, Steve Macks will be the halftime show presentation. He is a professional at “Simon Says” and the students will be participating.
· Raiders Up Rewards Program: This is new this year! It is social media driven. You can earn points for anything you do on social media. As you earn points, you can go onto the ‘store’ and ‘purchase’ (redeem) for prizes. With 15,000 points, you can redeem for a large neon “Wright State and Bud light sign.” You can redeem these points for duffle bags, drawstring bags, Wright State gear, or gift cards. Everyone is encouraged to sign up. Just link up your social media accounts/four square accounts and you will earn these points! We currently have 200 people on the site. 85 percent of these are students.
· At basketball events, if you take pictures with your phone and email to , you can earn points similar to your interactions on social media. These approved pictures will be shown up on the video board at games. Pictures will be posted on a website associated with this too.
· Raider Rowdies: I am really excited about their direction for this year. They want to be inclusive of all students. They are trying to organize pre-game events for students to get together.
· Giving out neon necklaces to students only. The student section will be seen and heard.
· Women’s soccer is finishing their regular season. Next Tuesday, October 30th, we will be hosting the first round of the Horizon tournament.
· Volleyball has two more matches: November 9th and 10th
· Mens’ soccer: Last season game is this Saturday (Ally’s Army Philanthropy Night). This is expecting a big crowd and it is also senior night.
· Halloween Hoopla is this upcoming Monday. We strongly encourage organizations to participate in this. We are trying to shift to a large university-wide event where Wright State as a whole reaches out to the community. We have invited all of the student organizations to this. Please email if you would like to RSVP to help for this event.
Student Recommendations:
· One of the problems we do have is attendance. Perhaps we can have a “March to the Game” or more tailgating events near the residence halls. Maybe we can have a bus that would drive the students to the games.
· More events on campus to meet the student athletes. More students would be invested in the games. We may look into co-sponsoring a “Meet and greet” with Student government.
· Students will go if it is convenient. If people knew more when games are, more people will go.
· In January, there will be an Organization Fair for House of Representatives—we would like to have the mens’/womens’ basketball teams participate in this.
· ‘Fill the Nutter Center’ event to recreate the atmosphere at games. If we have a strong student body, the energy spreads. We are 2nd in the Horizon League for attendance. We are pushing for more and more “Focus” games. We have done a blackout several years in a row. We are looking to reach the large community groups as well.
· Organize a rally with students on campus. We will work on this for the November 16th opener. One student suggested having a high school marching band/our cheerleaders in the quad before a big game.
· Perhaps advertize more in restaurants across the street to demonstrate our school pride. Also, maybe have a dedicated group/section of cheerers (Rowdies). If you want to get involved, please let Mark know.
· Maybe there will be a UD/Wright State rivalry in the future? We can hope!
6 student government members in favor of a 5 minute recession.
14 student government members opposed to a 5 minute recession.
Committee Reports
· Building and Grounds: We discussed L.E.A.D. certification in the new building. We are paying upfront for the certification fee. There are many more fees added on for the construction (this will wait for budget approval). Email Spencer with any points.
· Undergraduate Curriculum and Academic Policy Committee: Many new courses have been approved for the spring semester. Some certifications/programs/majors/minors have also been removed from the change to semesters. In a future meeting, the new academic admission standards will be analyzed. This change could change the ACT requirement for math, for example, up to a 22. Students would be conditionally accepted based on these new standards. As more information is found, this information will be relayed to the student government.
Report Discussion: Have they discussed a way to modify scale-up classrooms? Not quite yet—The Chief of Staff will look more into the program requirements for the new rooms and have more information tomorrow.
Public Forum
· Raiders Give Back- Collect hygiene items or toys. Next week, we will look into the 3 or 4 organizations we are helping. Bring these items to games on November 28th and December 1st.
· Public member- Today I went to Special Collections in the Dunbar Library. Building and Grounds does not archive their minutes. Minutes are on Faculty Senate website.

She has a large amount of experience in diversity issues. Her main goal is to be the voice for those who are not comfortable stepping out of their comfort zone and to break stereotypes.

Elizabeth Adebayo has been confirmed.
· Resolution 12-02: This resolution is about academic success at Wright State. A lot of faculty advisors are not seeing students who are on the verge of academic probation. If students are to see their advisors when dropping below a 2.25 GPA, this preventative measure may help avoid these students from being on academic probation at 2.0 GPA. Currently, at the 2.0 GPA you will lose financial aid, will not graduate, etc. We don’t want students to lose their means of graduating.
Brent Aebi moved to close the discussion. Mike Nickels seconded.

OSGA is a biannual conference of the four-year public institutions to discuss state-wide issues. Gary and Joey will be picking 4 Wright State University representatives.
· Chick-Fil-A as Endorser: Rainbow Alliance has been looking to see if there are other organizations that would pay to advertize at the Nutter Center. In a meeting with Dr. Sweeney, the reason nothing has been done, there is an advertizing contract through February with Chick-Fil-A. Anything decided will happen in February. We need exactly the amount of money Chick-Fil-A pays because we have heard two different values: $4,000 and $6,000. We would like to see a petition of student body’s interest. There was a reminder that earlier in the year, we voted to remain nonpartisan.
Jeremy Keller tabled this until further information was brought to us. Ryan Rushing seconded this.
