Unpacking the TOK title
You may choose to complete this in typed form. Please be thorough and neat.
Step 1: Write your question verbatim.Step Two: Identify key words/concepts
* Look for WOKs, AOKs, and other TOK related terms. Write them down.
* Are there any contestable concepts or ambiguous concepts? Write down those words.
* Is there an action term? If not, what is the basic question your essay must address?
Step Three: Identify assumptions
* Does the title seem to be making any assumptions?
* Do you make any assumptions about the title?
* Might someone else make an assumption about the title?
Step Four: Rephrase the title
* Re-write the question in your own words.
* Make sure all components are included—maybe break them down
Step Five: Identify KIs
* What problems or questions arise as a result of the title?
* These are your knowledge issues, and in order for you to address the title you must address these KIs.
Step Six: Make a claim and identify perspectives
* Now make a claim. This acts as your thesis for the essay.
* What perspectives must be addressed? Consider such demographic factors gender, race, religion, culture, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc.
* Draw from personal experience where appropriate and relevant.
Step Seven: Counterclaims
* It is important to have a balance between your claims and counterclaims.
* Where do you see possibilities for counterclaims in your essay?
Step Eight: Conclude
* After completing your evaluation of claims, counterclaims, AOKs, WOKs, other TOK terms, what conclusion(s) do you draw?
* Go back to the title. Make sure your conclusion is clearly aligned and relevant to the title.
Which AOKs are you planning on focusing on? Make a brief list and write a sentence or two explaining your approach.
Explain at least one possible example from that AOK (I want to hear about one non-personal example.) Be sure to describe the example in depth and also consider it from multiple perspectives/positions. Important: what WOKs are relevant to discuss in relation to this AOK?
