Seminar on Indigenous Peoples and Peacebuilding Experiences
August 13 and 14, 2009
La Paz, Bolivia
Hall of Honor Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia
Plaza Murillo, Calle Jurín
This Seminar is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia and the OAS Peace Fund.
The objective is to develop an ongoing dialogue over the diverse alternative methods of conflict resolution and the construction of peace in indigenous populations, and incorporate the knowledge, practices, and experiences of the indigenous communities in these areas. International and national speakers have been invited to give presentations on the principal topics indentified in each of the four panels, which will be enriched with accounts from two or three indigenous representatives. The final commentaries will be made by two speakers who will then answer questions from the audience. Indigenous leaders from different communities and regions of the country, as well as representatives of civil society, social organizations, NGOs, cooperation agencies, representatives of the diplomatic community, the media, and academic institutions, including universities and public intellectual groups, will also enrich the debate with their participation. The overall aim of the seminar is to learn from the experiences of the indigenous peoples in the area of peace building, and to identify the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as the region consolidates its democratic process.
