GSE Visiting Scholar Procedures

The GSE values the expertise of visiting scholars from around the globe who can contribute to the educational preparation of students and the professional development of faculty and staff. To best facilitate the experience of visiting scholars, sponsorship procedures are outlined below.

  1. GSE REQUEST for Visiting Scholar: Visiting Scholars (domestic or international) must have a designated GSE department home and identified GSE faculty sponsor. The sponsoring GSE faculty, with approval from the home department Chair, submits the GSE Vising Scholar Request Form (See below) to the GSE Dean for consideration. The form addresses the following:
  • Name, title, affiliation of the Scholar, time line for visit, GSE department and faculty sponsor (See obligations of GSE home department/sponsoring faculty below),
  • Overview of Scholar’s credentials/expertise (attach resume/vita),
  • Scholar’s professional development goals for the visit,
  • Potential contributions of Scholar to GSE/PSU programs, students, faculty;
  • Scholar support needs: office space, copying, computer, phone, etc.,
  • Draft of non-remunerative courtesy letter (see template in the GSE Handbook under Courtesy Appointment Procedure).
  1. PSU International Visiting Scholar Request Form: After GSE Dean’s approval, if the Visiting Scholar is an international colleague, the sponsoring faculty, in direct collaboration with the International Scholar, completes the PSU DS-2019 Visiting Scholar Request Formand all accompanying support materials.   1. GSE Department Chair and Faculty Sponsor Obligations:

The faculty sponsor:

  • With support from appropriate GSE Department Chair and in collaboration with the Visiting Scholar, completes all necessary paperwork for approval for the GSE Dean and PSU, if the Visitor is international;
  • Assists Visiting Scholar with travel and housing (if necessary), GSE office move-in (e.g., paperwork for keys, copy codes), and other logistic details;
  • Meets twice monthly with Visiting Scholar; introduces Visiting Scholar at program, department, school, and university meetings; facilitates teaching/research connections to meet professional development goals.
  1. Visiting Scholar Obligations: Visiting Scholars must abide by all PSU and GSE legal procedures and standards for ethical conduct as well as any applicable state or federal laws. In addition, Scholars will:
  • Work collaboratively with the sponsoring faculty and department on research and teaching,
  • Conduct at least one professional colloquium/brown bag session for students and faculty.
