Three years after the European launch ofthe second-generation Hyundai i30 five-door and wagon, Hyundai is introducing a Newi30 model range.
On sale fromMarch2015, the New i30 range features three bodystyles ( three-door,five-door and wagon), enhanced styling, improved engine efficiency, a new transmission, new safety and convenience features– plus the addition of a new 186ps high performance model– the i30 Turbo.With the newC-segment model range, fuel economy can be as low as3,6l/km and CO2 emissions as low as94 g/km.
New i30 is an example of Hyundai’s commitment to a regionalisation product strategy. New i30 has been designed and engineered at Hyundai Motor‘s European Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany and will be built in the region, at the company’s plant in Nošovice, Czech Republic.

Refreshed design
Surveys ofexisting owners and potential buyers of i30 confirm that the Fluidic Sculpture designphilosophy is greatly admired. It mirrors nature’s flowing lines, givingHyundai vehicles impactful three-dimensional presence. The second-generation i30 was regarded as being “stylish and modern”, “eye catching”and “conveying elegance and dynamism”,becoming a landmark for the brand when customers rated design as the number one purchase reason.
The exterior and interior design have been refreshed for the New i30. At the front there is a new accentuated hexagonal grille, while the profile is refreshed by new design of wheel trims (15-inch) and alloy wheels (16-,17-,18-inch). New Bi-Xenon headlamps also give the 2015 model a new look.
Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor’s Design Centre Europe, Thomas Bürkle, commented, “When designing the second-generation i30, we used strong, fluid lines to sculpt a car that exudes a sense of constant motion, even when stationary. We gave the car a bold stance, transmitting a confident attitude through sporty characteristics and dynamic proportions.
“The newly designed hexagonal grille’s appearance is a unique identifier for our brand and defines the New i30as a Hyundai family member. The jewel-like front headlamps that flank the grille add a strong personality to the vehicle, as well as a sense of refinement and luxury.”
The Newi30is available in Europe in a range of11 exterior colours –including 4new colours: Polar White, Orange Caramel, Jet Black, Ultimate Red. Inside, the seat and cabin trim is available in a choice of three colours –Black, beige and blue– in cloth, cloth & leather or full leather variations.

New safety and convenience features
Responding to the changing requirements of customers, New i30expands the already comprehensive list of available active and passive safety equipment by introducing three new technologies.
New Bi-Xenon headlamps, which have brighter illumination and deliver greater clarity for improved night time visibility, feature self-levelling as standard.
For improved active safety, the Hyundai Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) is installed. It alertsthe driver if the car begins to deviate from its lane without the turn indicator being activated. LDWS - previously introduced on i40 and Genesis -is part of Hyundai’s democratisation process of cascading advanced safety technologies into lower segments.
“For us it’s important to bring these advanced safety features to lower segments so that more consumers can benefit from these technologies, ultimately helping to avoid accidents,” explained Christian Löer, Head of Product Management & Pricing at Hyundai Motor Europe.
New convenience features include Hyundai’sSmart Parking Assist System (SPAS), which moves on from existing parallel-parking aids to offer driver assistance with bay parking. Sensors monitor the parking bay and car’s position, while an on-board computer controls the steering. Control of the accelerator and brake remain with the driver.
New ventilated front seats, known from more premium cars like the All-New Genesis or New i40, are available for the first time on New i30. These new ventilated front seats deliver greater convenience on hot summer days by delivering fresh cool air to the driver’s back. In combination with the heating function, the front passengers can always adapt the seats to their current needs and convenience in threedifferent stages of intensity.
Apart from newly added features, the New i30range willcarry-over the generous equipment list, which includes:10-way powered driver’s seat adjustment, heated front seats, an electric parking brake, a Smart Key with engine start/stop button, cruise control with speed limiter, navigation system with 7-inch touch-screen, dual-zone climate control, RDS radio/CD with MP3, iPod, Aux and USB support, six speaker audio system, ventilation for rear seat occupants, and a panoramic glass sunroof to flood the cabin with natural light.
Available active safety features include ESC (Electronic Stability Control), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), ABS (anti-lock braking system), BAS (emergency Brake Assist System), HAC (Hill Assist Control) to prevent roll-back and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal), which flashes the brake lights when an emergency stop is detected.
In terms of passive safety, every New i30in Europe is fitted with six airbags – front, side and full length curtain as standard – while an innovative driver’s knee airbag is optional. The second-generation i30 was awarded the maximum five-star safety rating in Euro NCAP’s impact assessment programme and the New i30features the same structural integrity.
The New i30 carries over the key dimensions of the original, with a generous wheelbase (2650 mm) and overall width (1780 mm excluding door mirrors),which create a cabin with impressive roominess. Space for front seat occupants is among thebest-in-class with generous head (1021 mm), leg (1067 mm) and shoulder (1420 mm) room. Cargo capacity remains highly competitive –378 litres (hatch) and 528 litres(wagon) with the rear seats upright.

Improved engines, plus a new 7-speed DCT transmission
The Newi30 is available with an expanded choice of seven diesel or gasoline power units – all Euro6-compliant -– with power outputs ranging from 90psto 186ps and CO2 emissions from as low as94g/km.
Buyers will have a choice of three diesel engines, a 1,4-litre with 90 ps and a 1,6-litre in two power output version of 110 ps and136 ps.
Customers who prefer gasoline can select from three natural aspirated powerunits, delivering from 100 psto 135 ps, or the new186psTurbo-GDI engine fitted to the new i30 Turbo.
For the New i30, the 100 ps1,4-litre Gamma engine is replaced by a newly developed four-cylinder Kappa unit..This 1352 cc engine is significantly lighter than its predecessor, the Gamma 1,4-litre engine. At only 87 kg, the engine’s base weight has been reduced by 14 kg, resulting in lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of5,6l/100 km andof129g/km CO2 respectively.
The two 1,6-litre diesels and the 1.6-litre gasoline GDI engine are available with the new seven-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). This option replaces the previous compact, conventional six-speed torque-converter automatic. The new 7-speed DCT offers drivers fully automatic operation (ideal for town driving) or sequential manual gear changes for greater driver involvement.
In terms of fuel saving technologies, the New i30 features: Integrated Stop & Go (ISG), low rolling-resistance tyres, an alternator management system (AMS) and a drag-reducing ‘active air flap’ in the front grille.

Delivering a better driving experience
Hyundai’s chassis engineering team for the New i30 wasasked to find ways of improving on the original model’s already highly competent ride/handling balance, while also enhancing the car’s refinement.
The cabin of the New i30 is now even quieter with improved NVH levels to deliver higher comfort for all passengers. The permanently-magnetised Brushless Alternating Current motor-driven power steering system has been upgraded for more precise steering and improved handling characteristics.
The robust bodyshell, long wheelbase (2650 mm)and wide track (up to 1571 mm) were unchanged as they provide an excellent foundation for the operation of the fully independent suspension, by MacPherson Struts at the front and a multi-link system at the rear. The electric rack and pinion power steering with its responsive 2,85 turnsfrom lock-to-lockand the option of Hyundai’s innovative FLEX STEER system (with three operating modes, Comfort, Normal and Sport) is also still on board.
The all-disc braking system, with 280 or 300 mm ventilated front discs and 262 or 284 mm solid rear discs provide reassuring stopping capabilities.
Unique customer support
Like all new Hyundai models, the New i30 for 2015 is backed up by Hyundai’s unique, Europe-only, Five Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty package. This care programme provides customers with a five-year warranty with no mileage limit, five years of roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.

For buyers looking for more sporty driving dynamics and distinctive design without compromising driveability and comfort, Hyundai is adding a new top-of-the-range model to the New i30line-up for 2015.
The new i30 Turbo is powered by a turbo-charged version of the 1.6-litre Gamma GDI engine. Jürgen Grimm, Head of Powertrain at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany explains:
“We wanted to add a powerful but not aggressive engine to the i30 line-up as our focus was on driver enjoyment, not simply performance figures. By engineering maximum power output to186psat5500rpm, we could achieve a significant increase in low end torque, delivering more linear acceleration and greater driveability of the engine.”
The engine generates265 Nm of torque from just 1500to4500 revs, which results in a more dynamic acceleration performance. The power is delivered to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes8,0seconds and top speed is 219 km/h.
To complement the 28per cent hike in power and 38per cent increase in torque (over the 1.6 GDI model), the i30 Turbo is fitted with sports suspension tuning,new 18-inch alloy wheels and tyres and a more direct steering (2,78 turns lock-to-lock). The Turbo model is fitted with 300 mm ventilated discs (front) and 284 mm solid discs (rear).
To deliver a sporty drive, tuned to European roads, the i30 Turbowas engineered at Hyundai’s Test Centre at the famous Nürburgringin Germany. Tuning the car’s sporty characteristics was carried out alongside an ‘Accelerated Durability Test’ that simulates a normal vehicle’s lifecycle in just four to six weeks, covering 110 laps of the demanding circuit per week. Every lap of the 20,8 km long, very demanding track is comparable to nearly 380 km on normal road use.
The team at Hyundai’s European design centre made a host of changes to i30 Turbo to differentiate it from its siblings. Exterior design features bespoke to the New i30 Turbo highlight the car’s sporty character including a new radiator grille, front and rear bumper with red detailing, new front LED design, twin exhausts and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Continuing the car’s distinctive design on the inside, the designers specified a black headlining, sports front seats and rear seats with red detailing, sports instrument cluster and contrasting red details on the steering wheel, gear knob and door trims.
The New i30 Turbo will be available in both three-door and five-door hatchback bodystyles, in a range of unique paint finishes including the new colour: Jet Black - exclusive for Turbo model.
