THE 2015 STUDENT EXHIBIT

Art in Public Places – Photographing Sacramento Region’s Public Art

OPEN CALL FOR ENTRIES

In partnership with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC), Viewpoint Photographic Art Center invites all high school and college students of photography to submit photographs of Sacramento’s public art located throughout the city and county of Sacramento. Students can participate in this event bysubmitting up to three (3) photographs. Downloadable maps and visual guides to the location of all public art are available on SMAC’s website,

The Art in Public Places Exhibit will run from Tuesday, October 6 through

Saturday, November 7, 2015.

Your submissions are limited to images of Sacramento’s public art. The exhibit will showcase the students’ impressions of Sacramento’s public art. In addition, SMAC will also select images from the submissions for display on SMAC’s website.

SubmissionKey Points:

  • Limited to three (3) entries per student. Only 28 entries will be selected for the exhibit in the Viewpoint Step Up Gallery. See Submission Process next page.
  • All entries will be consideredby SMAC for its website.
  • Prepare your work early and submit your digital image files duringthe submission period.
  • The entry period for the 2015 Art in Public Places Student Exhibit opens on Saturday, August 1 and closes on Saturday, September 12 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Late submissions will not be accepted for consideration.
  • All entrants to Art in Public Places must be currently enrolled high school or college, or will be enrolled by Fall 2015.
  • There is no age restriction.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • You will be notified if your entry is accepted. The PrintLabelwill be due with your accepted image(s). Do not send in the form with your digital file(s).The PrintLabel is the last page of this prospectus.

Viewpoint will host an Artist Reception on Friday evening October 9 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., for allmembers, artists and their guests. Refreshments will be served.

The curators willpresent three (3) Best of Show awards entitling the winners to a one-year Viewpoint membership. Current student members will receive a one-year membership extension.

  • August 1 - Entry Period Begins

  • September 19 – Photographers Notified of Acceptance by Viewpoint and SMAC
  • September 30 – Accepted Entries Due at Viewpoint

  • October 9 - Members and Artists Reception at Viewpoint Gallery6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • October 10 - Second Saturday Reception at Viewpoint Gallery5:30 until 9:00 p.m.
  • November 7 - Exhibit Ends
  • November 10 - First Day To Pick-up Unsold Prints
  • December 12 - Last day to Pick-up Unsold Prints by 5:00 p.m.

SUBMISSION, SELECTION, DISPLAYandSALES

SUBMISSION PROCESS - Please review the specifications carefully. Submissions that are not in compliancewill not be accepted for the exhibition.

  • Artwork submitted for Art in Public Places must be created by the student entering it.
  • 28 prints selected by the curators and that meet exhibition criteria will be accepted forthe Art in Public Places Student Exhibit.
  • All submitted images will be considered for placement on the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission website.
  • All entrants to Art in Public Places must be currently enrolledhigh school or college students, or will be enrolled by Fall 2015. There is no age restriction.
  • All submissions must be in digital format according to the Digital File Preparation specifications below.
  • Send digital files to Judy Yemma .
  • Include the following information in your email with your digital submission:
  • A brief description of the images submitted, including final print medium/type (i.e. gelatin silver; digital, etc.),
  • The approximate size of the printed image and mattedsize, both as height x width (see size restrictions under Preparation of Artwork below). For example; image size = 10” h x 8“w, mat size = 16” h x 14”w.
  • Your name, address, phone number, and email address,
  • Title of your work.

Send files as attachments to your email.

DO NOT insert images into the body of your email text.

Digital File Preparation:

  • sRGB color space
  • Conversion of image file to jpeg or png.
  • A file size of less than 2 MB (For example, a file that is 1200 pixels by 1600 pixels).
  • File names should contain NO capitals, spaces, or any of these special characters:!#$%'^@-+.,;:=().
  • File names should contain the following information: Last name of artist; title of image; and the name of the public art piece title. Example: smith_bronzedancers_happiness.jpg

Selection Process

  • Images will be selected for display and inclusion on the SMAC website by the Viewpoint Curatorial Committee and by SMAC.
  • The Curatorial Committee make selections from the submitteddigital image files.
  • Entrants will be notified of acceptance by September 19, 2015.

Student photographers whose work is accepted by Viewpoint for display will be required to furnish additional information, including:

  • A brief (one paragraph) artist statement,
  • A description of the process used in printing the image, and
  • The completed Print Label (found at the end of this prospectus).
  • SMAC may have additional requirements. Students will be notified if they differ from Viewpoint’s requirements.

DISPLAY AND SALE OF ACCEPTEDARTWORK

  • The student photographer will retain copyright of the image, but agrees that any accepted imagesubmitted to the Art in Public Places exhibit may be used for marketing and promotionalpurposes by Viewpoint Photographic ArtCenter or SMAC.
  • Artwork that is selected for exhibit and is not available for purchase must be clearly designated as ‘NSF’(Not for Sale) on the Print Label. Images designated, as ‘NSF’ will not be listed in the Viewpoint onlineStore.
  • Artists intending to sell their work must include a clearly marked price on thePrint Label.
  • All work available for sale will be sold through the Viewpoint online Store. The digital image(s)you submitted for entry willbe used to display your print in the Store.Make sure your digital file best represents the final printed image.
  • A commission of forty percent (40%) of the purchase price on each photo graphic print sold will be retained by Viewpoint.
  • Checks for the sale of artwork sold will be mailed to artists 30 days after the close of the exhibit.

PRESENTATION OF ACCEPTED ARTWORK

All accepted entries must comply with the following practices for professionalPresentation:

  • The maximum size of the work submitted, including mats, shallbe 20 X 24 inches for standard prints and 28 inches in thelongest margin for panoramic prints.
  • Prints should be mounted using archival matting and archivalbacking boards, archival corners, linen or cloth tape, or bedry-mounted.
  • Corrugated backing board, foam cores or otherbacking will not be accepted.
  • Colored mats will not be accepted. Use gallery white matting.
  • Alternative presentation materials such as canvas andaluminum are acceptable, but should be submitted with their own glazing or othercustomized coverings if required for their protection.
  • All matted work will be exhibited under protective acrylic (plexi) to ensure itsprotection.
  • Framed work and glass coverings will not be accepted for exhibition.
  • Viewpoint will provide protective acrylic for entries using the followingstandard mat sizes: 8 X 10 inches, 11 X 14 inches, 14 X 18 inches, 16 X 20 inches,18 X 24 inches, and 20 X 24 inches.
  • Entrants who submit matted prints with irregular measurements will be asked toprovide their own protective acrylic cover (plex) at the time of submission. Please checkwith Viewpoint for specifications before purchasing the protective acrylic.
  • Artwork printedon canvas, aluminum or other non-traditional surfaces will notrequire protective acrylic coverings, but the entrant is encouraged to provideother protective materials if needed.

DELIVERING AND PICKING UP ACCEPTED ARTWORK

  • All accepted entries must include a completed copy of the Print Label (last page of thisprospectus).
  • All matted prints must be delivered in a clearprotective sleeve.Do not seal the sleeve. Non-matted entries, such as canvas oraluminum prints, must be submitted in protective packaging or containersdesigned for the work.
  • Artwork submitted for this show will be treated with the utmost care. Viewpoint’s responsibility and liability arising from or connected with damage to the artwork regardless of any cause whatsoever is limited to theartist’s commission value (60%) of the image submitted.
  • Accepted prints must be received by 5:00 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015, whether delivered inperson or shipped.Late entries will not be accepted.
  • If you are shipping your print,you are responsiblefor the cost, care, protection, and insurance of the artwork during shipment toand from Viewpoint Photographic Art Center. Viewpoint’s address is on the PrintLabel included in this prospectus.
  • If you wish to have your print shipped back to you, you must include a prepaid shipping label with your print, including insurance to cover the price of your work.
  • All unsold exhibit prints must be picked up at Viewpoint no later than5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2015. Prints submitted with return mailing materials will besent out no later than this date.

Any work exhibited in the Art in Public Places Student Show that is not picked up by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2015 becomes the property of the Viewpoint Photographic ArtCenter.
