Maui was a little provincial town / city, didn’t have much to offer as far as culture and sports were concerned.
The danger was to lose young people to bigger cities: young people would prefer to go to the bigger cities close by that had more to offer.
In 2005, a group of parents from a parent / school association got together with district associations and started a committee in view to launch this project.
In 2006, sport associations joined them: until 2006 it was only going to be a cultural centre, but from 2006 it became cultural and sport.
Project could then be started, thanks to all these people, this good will, and to regional firms / enterprises that helped financially. / N1 – Maui is a little town

E8 – A sport and cultural centre will help prevent young people leaving as it will be something the town has to offer / in 2005 a group of students’ parents formed a committee with the help of the council; / in 2006 sports organisations joined the committee / enterprises from the region helped finance this project.

Main reason: water is expensive, or rather treated water is.
Prices have increased by more than 40% in last 10 years.
Rainwater is free and accessible.
Another reason is purely ecological (mention of the word ‘environment’ rather than ecological shows higher understanding). Any recycling means less waste and helps our planet.
In some countries (such as Belgium), houses must be built with a cistern for rainwater but in France the law hasn’t encouraged it.
Since 2008, they take it into account but with conditions such as only using recycled water in garden / outside uses / not for human uses / consumption. / N1 – It’secological.
N2 – Rainwater is not expensive.
A3 – It’s good for the planet butnot possible at the moment.
A4– Recycled water is free, and for everyone to avoid pollution of our planet.
M5 – Water is expensive, there’s been a 40% rise of the price in the past 10 years, the treatment is what costs a lot, rainwater is free.
M6 – It’s the water treatment that’s expensive / rainwater is available to all, the other reason is that we are helping the planet / in Belgium new houses have to have a tank to hold rainwater / in some countries rainwater is forbidden for human consumption.
E7 – The price of water has increased by 40%. / making water drinkable is expensive; rainwater is free and accessible / until recently France hadn’t encouraged the use of rainwater / in 2008 a condition was made that you could only use rainwater for your gardens or outside, and it remains forbidden to use rainwater inside your house.
E8– It is better to recycle; if you collect water it avoids wastage and it is a way in which you must help your planet / it is good for the environment.
Not Achieved / NØ / No response; no relevant evidence.
N1 / Very little valid information about using rainwater.
N2 / Little valid information about using rainwater.
Achievement / A3 / Some valid information about using rainwater.
A4 / A range of valid information about using rainwater, and an attempted valid explanation about the advantages of doing so.
Merit / M5 / Explanation about the advantages of recycling rainwater and whether it’s possible is supported by information from the text.
M6 / Fullexplanation about the advantages of recycling rainwater, and specific situations it’s allowed is supported by information from the text.
Excellence / E7 / A justified answer about recycling rainwater, the benefit for the environment and the restrictions of the system described.
E8 / A fully justified answer about recycling rainwater, the benefits for the environment and the restrictions to non-human usage imposed by the system described.

These examples are typical of candidates at the score indicated. However, they are not full responses, and are intended to be indicative rather than prescriptive.
(Some departments) have allowed inside usage such as in toilet or washing (clothes) (reason is) toilets represent 20 to 30% of water consumption and washing 12% (explanation=) it makes sense to allow recycled water for that.
The fear is that personal networks will contaminate the town network. However, in his opinion, the risk is not high, especially if restricted to domestic uses.
In some countries, rainwater is used without being treated for all usage even for drinking. / N1 –There is a risk of contamination.
N2 –There is a risk to drink rainwater.
A3 –There is a risk but the engineer says it’s not huge.
A4 –They’ve allowed to use rainwater, but not for drinking / 20–30% of water is used for toilets.
M5 – In some departments, rainwater can be used in the toilets. The biggest fear is contamination but in his opinion it’s not enormous.
M6 – Toilets use 20-30 % of water so using rainwater, in this case, is important. In his opinion, the risk is not large for use in the garden or toilets.
E7 – Some departments have put into place other laws, to permit certain uses inside / flushing the toilet uses 20–30% and washing clothes 12%, so it seems evident that permitting rainwater usage in these areas is important / the risks of pollution aren’t high, so rainwater should definitely be used for the garden, toilets and washing / in some countries, the water is drunk without treatment.
E8 – Some new rules allow the use of rainwater inside, certain uses inside the house such as flushing toilets is a good way to utilise recycled water / thebiggest fear is that if a private collection is polluted it can contaminate the town water supply / the engineer thinks it’s unlikely In some countries around the world, although less polluted, rainwater is even used for drinking, without having been treated.
Not Achieved / NØ / No response; no relevant evidence.
N1 / Very little valid information about what’s changing in this domain.
N2 / Little valid information about what’s changing in this domain.
Achievement / A3 / Some valid information about what’s changing in this domain.
A4 / A range of valid information about the new ideas regarding using recycled water, and an attempted valid explanation about why it makes sense.
Merit / M5 / Explanation about the new ideas, why they makes sense, and whether there are risks involved is supported by information from the text.
M6 / Fullexplanation about the new ideas, why they makes sense, the fear of contaminated water, and the opinion of the speaker is supported by information from the text.
Excellence / E7 / A justified answer about what the speaker thinks of using recycled water inside in specific situations, and why recycled water is feared.
E8 / A fully justified answer about what the speaker thinks of using recycled water inside in specific situations, why recycled water is feared, and a comparison with other countries.

Ants run around all the time, never stop. Keeping looking for food stuff to store. That’s what ants do, always seeking to add to reserves and carrying things that are way bigger than themselves.
Last night did 20 return trips, some as far as 250 metres away (explanation of scandalous along the line of:) it’s a very long distance and lots of trips for little ants – it’s meant to be a bit funny (250 metres!!!).
(Complains that) they’re badly treated (inference), fed up with injustice, they do all the work, go out each night then also have to work by day on nest.
They are called soldiers, but really they are servants. / N1 – Look for food.
N2 – Look for something to eat every night.
A3 – They work, they look for food, they are complaining about the hard work they have to do.
A4– They have to look for food then take it back, they work like servants, they’re fed up with the injustice.
M5 – They are expected to work too much: they run without stopping, looking for things to eat or save for later, they complain about the way they are treated.
M6 – They have to look for food for later; they look for and carry food that is often bigger than them a distance of 250 m.
E7 – The ants are expected to go on a way for 250 m and that is really much for small animals like them. She has to go out at night even though she’s afraid of the dark, and during the day she has to help build the nest.
E8 – They work all the time without stopping, they have to find food, transport loads bigger than themselves and store it. It scandalous because they have to go and return more than 20 times a night and they had to do this for 250 m!
