Grading:

Your grade in band is determined as a composite of daily rehearsals, weekly lesson attendance, required performances and additional credit activities such as solo/ensemble, jazz band, musical pit orchestra, pep band, private lessons, student mentoring and concert reports.

30% Daily Rehearsal / Lesson Attendance, 70% Benchmark check-offs and performances

Lessons: (10 points each lesson)

Students will receive 6 lessons per quarter. Each lesson will be 15 minutes and will be scheduled at the convenience of the student (study hall, before or after school, during a block class). Lessons are an essential part of the band program. They enable one on one or small group instruction and give time for the instructor to listen and help each student on solos, band music and lesson book material. Students will receive 10 points per lesson (60 points).

Benchmark Exercises: (10 points each exercise)

Each student will need to check off 4 benchmark exercises per quarter, each worth 10 points (40 points). These benchmarks are from their lesson books and are specific to your child’s instrument. The exercises will be assigned at the beginning of each quarter.

It is our goal to have chair tests throughout the year; Spring chair test will be used to determine next year’s bands.

Instrument Practice:

Benchmark exercises are included this year as a band expectation and class requirement. Regular practice on your instrument will be necessary to develop one year of growth as a student musician. Your goal should be to practice three times per week outside of class.
