Wexham Park Hospital (Frimley Health)
The Wexham Park Hospital in Slough serves a catchment population of approximately 500,000. In 2015 there were 4300 deliveries and gynaecological outpatient episodes; in addition there were 1954 Colposcopy attendances. There are about 150 hysterectomies performed annually, and 1300 laparoscopic procedures.

There are 9 posts recognised for Specialist training, four at ST1-2 and three at ST3-5 and two at ST6/7.
We work with three tiers of junior and middle-grade medical staff. Tier 1 has 12 posts (4 in O+G, 6 GPVTS, 2 FYs). Tier two has 7 posts (2 at ST3, 1at ST5, 2 at St6-7, 2 Trustgrade posts). Tier three has 7 posts (4 locum consultant resident on-call, 3 senior staff grades)
There are four sites across which trainees are timetabled. These sites include Wexham Park Hospital - Wexham, Heatherwood Hospital - Ascot, King Edward Hospital – Windsor and ST Marks Hospital – Maidenhead.
All trainees will receive training and provide service in both obstetrics and gynaecology. The ST6/7 trainees on rotation will have proportionately more day time duties in either Obstetrics or Gynaecology depending on their special interest. All other trainees can expect to get access according to the core-curriculum. Trainees report regular access to operating sessions over an above the standard requirements (clinics, emergency care, labour ward etc)
We offer broad training in the management of medium to high risk pregnancy, with five on-site and 3 satellite outpatient clinics. In addition, Ms Jwarah and Mr Eniola run a diabetic ANC in conjunction with the consultant endocrinologists. There is a monthly Haematology Obstetric clinic run by Dr Philpott and Mr Eniola. The Fetal Assessment Unit provides monitoring for hypertensive disease, cholestasis of pregnancy etc. A weekly ECV service also runs out of the FAU. Ms Kalla and Ms Sarkar offer training in obstetric imaging to trainees.
The Labour Ward has a designated consultant from 0800 to 2000 hours every day. There is a resident on-call consultant for three nights a week, from 2000 to 0800hrs. Obstetric Triage is a busy area and provides services for acute attendances to the maternity services from 16 weeks onwards.
A dedicated Consultant-of-the-Week is available Monday to Friday to conduct ward rounds and provide senior support for all acute admissions in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The CotW is supported by a Tier 1 and 2 in Gynaecology and a Tier 1 in Obstetrics.
Scan training in early pregnancy is provided by Mr Vathanan and Mr Garcia, with availability for intermediate training. There are daily early pregnancy clinics. There are 2 Rapid Access Clinics and 5 Colposcopy clinics run each week, with training opportunities in either. There is opportunity to undertake accreditation for BSCCP. Two fertility clinics and a Urodynamic session runs each week. There are 4 on-site and 3 off-site general gynaecology clinics. Operative gynaecology is mostly based at the Wexham site with a small number of predominantly day cases performed at the Heatherwood site.
The unit offers undergraduate training to medical students from Southampton University and American University of the Caribbean.
All trainees are required to participate in the perinatal morbidity and mortality meetings, the governance meetings, the incident review group meeting, each held monthly. ST3-5s are expected to attend specialty teaching and training every Friday afternoon, and to undertake an audit project whilst in post. In addition, senior trainees are invited to attend policy and clinical governance meetings, and are encouraged to help draft guidelines, care pathways etc. Audit projects should also be undertaken.
