Competency Statement:The Participant has demonstrated a satisfactory standard of competence in promoting continence in school age children.
The Participant:
- Will currently be Bands 4, 5, 6 or 7 of the School Nursing Team within the Children’s Division of Southern Health
- The assessed risk if competence is not reached is LOW/MODERATE
- This is an assessed competency for;
- All newly qualified staff
- All staff holding their first post within Southern Health and will be assessed by a linemanager holding this competency.
- All other staff will be able to self-assess (to include PDR and peer review)

Demonstrate skills in identifying and managing childhood continence issues. /
- Knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the bowel and bladder.
- Knowledge of normal child development and ages when children attain bladder and bowel control during the day and night.
- Knowledge of neurological or physical conditions which may delay or prevent a child gaining continence.
- Knowledge and understanding of basic behavioural strategies to help with constipation and soiling.
- Knowledge and understanding of basic behavioural strategies to help with day and night wetting.
Use skills and professional judgement to consider when a child or young person needs referring to a secondary service. /
- Work within own capabilities. Able to appropriately liaise with peers or other health professionals if there is uncertainty as to the child or young person’s management.
- Appropriately refers children or young people, who on assessment may have constipation, to a medical practitioner [i.e. GP or Paediatrician].
- Refers children and young people to GP/paediatrician if they are showing symptoms of an overactive bladder and not responding to behavioural strategies.
- Appropriately refers children or young people to secondary Enuresis clinic if available and meets referral criteria.
- Ability to consider when a child may need referral to Tier 1 or Tier 2 Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service [CAMHS]
Sensitively engage with the child/ young person,parent/ carer in clinical relationship. /
- Demonstrates sensitivity when dealing with children and young people with continence issues.
- Use of appropriate language to suit the level of understanding of the individual child and family.
- Able to gain consent to sensitively liaise with Schools or other professionals as appropriate.
- Awareness of confidentiality when sharing information with third parties.
- Complies with the Trust’s Lone Working Policy
Work in partnership with children, young people, families and other professionals when assessing and planning the care of a child/young person with continence needs. /
- Offers appropriate supportive health information to the family.
- Knowledge of support networks for children, young people and families.
- Demonstrates ability to design care plans for home and/or school in partnership with the child/young person, family and school.
Demonstrate knowledge and expertise regarding child and family vulnerability factors at all contacts. /
- Knowledge of potential risk factors for harm and neglect of children and young people.
- Recognise and report situations where there might be a need for protection.
- Knowledge of local safeguarding procedures and Trust Safeguarding Children policies.
- Evidence of accessing Safeguarding training appropriate for role.
