June 2011

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The district math departments started using the TI-nspire calculator in all levels of the Algebra 1 curriculum beginning September 2010. Beginning September 2011, the TI-nspire will be incorporated into the Geometry and Algebra II classrooms as well. Students in those courses will be required to purchase their own calculator. The TI-nspire was chosen due to its versatility and applicability to all math subjects meaning that students will be able to use this calculator for all subsequent math courses. The TI-nspire calculator is permitted on the SAT, PSAT, ACT and Advanced Placement (AP) tests. It is also approved for use on the NJ state-required assessments including the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).

Understanding that the purchase of this calculator represents a considerable expense, we hope that this advance notice will help you plan for its purchase. Be sure that you purchase the TI-nspire with touchpad, NOT the TI-nspire CAS. The correct calculator has the faceplate with a keyboard at the bottom but is not the CAS model (see picture on back). These calculators are currently available in local retail stores. Once purchased, be sure to engrave your child’s name on the calculator and keep a record of the serial number.

The Lenape Regional High School District provides a comprehensive and rigorous mathematics program that both meets and exceeds NJ State Standards. A balanced program consists of sound teaching practices that incorporate technology effectively, an essential ingredient in the 21st century classroom. It aids students in math understanding and prepares them for a technological future. We believe calculator use is an integral component of any instructional math program yet does not replace the need to learn basic facts, perform mental computation, and develop conceptual understanding or problem-solving skills.

In this budget-conscious time, we are asking all students to help us participate in the Texas Instruments Technology Reward Program. Each retail package comes with a 50-point reward symbol (shown on back) that can only be redeemed by schools to acquire additional Texas Instruments educational products. Your child’s math teacher will be collecting these points during the first week of school. Please do not discard these valuable reward points.

For questions or concerns, please contact either Heather Xenakis, the Mathematics Department Supervisor at Seneca: 609-268-4600 ext. 6640;r Gail Griffin, Math Dept Coordinator ext. 6621; .

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Spector
