PRESS RELEASE DATED 16-08-09
DELHI TRAFFIC POLICE
Safe Pedestrian Crossing Fortnight
(17TH -31ST August 2009)
Delhi Police is observing “Safe Pedestrian Crossing Fortnight” from 17th Aug. 2009. Good result received by the Safe pedestrian week from 1st to 7th June, which was later enhanced to a fortnight has prompted to undertake a similar drive. It is an attempt to generate awareness among pedestrians and motorists to become responsible road user. From the analysis of the fatal accidents one thing becomes strikingly clear that the majority of the fatalities happen to pedestrians. There were 2088 deaths due to road accidents in Delhi in 2008 and the number of pedestrian among them were 1075 i.e. 51.48% of the total fatalities. The picture is almost the same this year also.
There are 589 intersections normally manned by the traffic staff throughout the capital. In addition to these intersections 116 midsections have been identified where F.O.Bs, subways etc are situated and the traffic staff has also been deployed their.
Pedestrian being the soft target makes it all the more necessary to educate road users, stressing the safety of the pedestrians. Safe pedestrian week is a step in this direction in which consolidated efforts will be made to create awareness among the pedestrians as well as the motorists alike.
Activities to be covered up during the Pedestrian Safety week
Pedestrian has an equal right on roads. It is the duty of the motorists to respect the pedestrians’ right. Delhi Traffic police is making an effort in this direction to educate both pedestrians and motorists, and to encourage them to follow the traffic rules and regulations wholeheartedly. Following are some of the efforts being undertaken by the traffic police during the drive-
1. Wide publicity is being given through the use of mass media such as F. M. Radio stations and print media so that the road users become aware of the drive and make special efforts in this direction.
2. Literature is also being distributed at major intersections by Traffic Police to educate the pedestrians.
3. Boards/Hordings for safe crossing have been displayed at all the major intersections, foot over bridges and subways for educating the pedestrians.
4. Mobile Exhibition Vans are being used for educating the road users specially the pedestrians. These vans have the staff specially trained to educate the road users. These vans are being displayed all over the capital at prominent places like India Gate, ISBT, major intersections where pedestrian presence is maximum.
5. Help of traffic wardens and other NGOs is also being undertaken in this campaign.
6. Road markings like zebra crossings, stop line etc. has been repainted and advisory sign boards for pedestrians are being displayed at all the major intersections.
For pedestrians and drivers alike, it is important to realize that each has rights and duties with respect to the other. Pedestrians need to recognize that, like motorists, they are road users and have a responsibility to know the road rules. Improving safety is something we all care about. But the result needs a commitment to safety that comes from every driver and every pedestrian who navigates through our city.
