English / In writing we will be developing the following skills:
Spelling:Past tense verbs adding –ed and adding -ing; homophones; words with double consonants; suffixes –ly, -ous. ‘ou’ sound; ‘i’ sound spelt ‘y’; prefixes un-, dis-; words with apostrophes;
Grammar:Using punctuation including speech; powerful verbs; adverbs and fronted adverbials; adjectives; similes and metaphors;apostrophes.
Creative Writing, speaking and Listening: Linked to the book,’ The Adventures of The Dish and Spoon’; newpaper reports linked to Anglo Saxons and Vikings; poetry linked to Remembrance; role play; hotseating; talk for writing.
In reading we will be developing the following skills: using dictionaries and thesauruses; explaining the meaning of words in context; asking questions to improve understanding of a text; retrieving and recording information from non-fiction texts. / In writing we will be developing the following skills:
Spelling:prefixes mis-; year 3 and 4 statutory spellings; words with ‘ch’ sound; suffixes-able/ -ible; -ation; -gue/-queendings;words with ‘ei’;
Grammar:pronouns and nouns; punctuation and using semi colons; clauses; verbs; adjectival phrases; apostrophes.
Creative Writing, speaking and Listening: Creating imaginary worlds; persuasive writing; advert making; role play; visualization; talk for writing
In reading we will be developing the following skills:using dictionaries and thesauruses;inferring meanings from the text; predicting what might happen; identifying some text type organisational features in persuasive writing;
We will also celebrate World Book Day. / In writing we will be developing the following skills:
Spelling:‘sure’ and ‘ture’ words; revision of year 3 / 4 words; revision and consolidation of suffixes, prefixes and verb endings.
Grammar:Revision and consolidation of Autumn and Spring topics; paragraphs; imperative verbs; verb tenses.
Creative Writing, speaking and Listening: Writing stories with issues and dilemmas linked to the texts, ‘Bill’s New Frock’ and ‘The Fib’; role play, drama, hotseating, freeze framing; talk for writing; Writing explanations-linked to Science. Diary writing linked to History Tudors.
In reading we will be developing the following skills: : using dictionaries and thesauruses; inferring meanings from the text; predicting what might happen ; identifying some text type organisational features, for example, narrative and explanation.
Mathematics / In mathematics we will be developing our number fluency through: : recognising place value in a four-digit number, comparing and rounding numbers, counting forwards and backwards in multiples of a given number, identifying Roman numerals, developing our understanding of fractions and decimals and regular practice of multiplication and division facts.
In geometry and measures we will be developing our skills in: classifying geometric shapes, identifying acute and obtuse angles, recognising symmetry and plotting coordinates on a 2D grid. / In mathematics we will be developing our number fluency through: mental calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), using formal written methods to add, subtract and multiply where appropriate, solving problems and regular practice of multiplication and division facts. We will further develop our understanding of place value and estimating/approximating.
In statistics we will be developing our skills in: presenting data using graphs and solving problems using information presented in graphs. / In mathematics we will be developing our number fluency through: further developing our understanding of fractions and decimals and solving problems related to fractions, measure and money. We will continue to practise multiplication and division facts. We will further develop our skills with mental and written calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
In geometry and measures we will be developing our skills in: estimating and measuring time, length, perimeter, area, weight, capacity and converting between different units of measure (e.g. km to m).
Science / We will be covering the following areas to develop our scientific skills in Physical Processes-
It’s Electric! Physics: Electricity:Identifying common appliances that run on electricity; constructing a simple electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers; recognising some common conductors and insulators. / We will be covering the following areas to develop our scientific skills in Physical Processes-
Listen Up!Physics: Sound: Identifying how sounds are made;recognising that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear;recognising that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.
We will be covering the following areas to develop our scientific skills in Materials-Chemistry: States of Matter Scientists: Comparing and grouping materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases; observing that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled. / We will be covering the following areas to develop our scientific skills in Life and Living Processes- Biology: Animals including Humans:Identifying and describing the functions of the human digestive system;
Identifying the different types of human teeth and their functions.
