IB English IV Summer Assignment 2018
Mrs. Hill
In preparation for your first semester: HL Works in Translation Part 1
Re-read the entire text: How to Read Like a Professor. You will be using it to plan your Interactive Oral in the fall (more on that in August).
Please purchase three novels (used novels are fine as long as they are clean with no highlights, underlines, or annotations):
- The Complete Persepolis ISBN: 978-0-375-71483-2
* byMarjaneSatrapi
* Original language: French
2. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer ISBN: 978-0-375-72584-5
*by Patrick Suskind
* Original language: German
3. Chronicle of a Death ForetoldISBN: 978-1-4000-3471-0
*by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
* Original language: Spanish
This part of the course is a literary study of three works in translation based on a close reading of the works themselves.To assist in close reading, it is necessary to purchase the novels in order to annotate your thoughts in preparation for writing the Reflective Statement portion of the EA Written Assignment—worth 25 % of your IB English grade. The WA consists of four stages, which will be thoroughly explained when you receive the syllabus. These stages must be completed sequentially, in other words, you must not jump ahead. Therefore, purchase the novels over the summer but do not read them, and most importantly, do not research/Google/SparkNotes the texts. Instructions for the stages of the WA will be provided in your syllabus on the first day of class. You will begin reading and annotating one of the novels with a specific literary purpose in mind on the first week. Failure to follow this summer assignment as directed will result in a lower score on your WA.
Focus on writing your EE first draft and building your vocabulary over the summer. A vocabulary component is built into each of our three English rubrics.
For those of you who like to plan ahead: Second Semester: HL Literary Genre--Drama
