ThTT 552: FORMATION, STRUCTURE, AND ASSEMBLY

OF MEDICAL TEXTILE PRODUCTS

Course Justification

This course is required in the MS Textiles: Medical Textiles Specialization. The US textiles industry is moving rapidly toward the manufacturing of high value-added textile structures and products such as smart textiles, protective textiles, and medical textiles. The course covers broad range of formation technologies (braiding, weaving, knitted, nonwoven and assembly) that are used to manufacture textile structures for medical textile products. Additionally, the course covers design, structure/property relationships and performance of medical textile products. To strengthen the students learning effectiveness an independent project is required which is dedicated to hands on experience of the design, formation, assembly, finishing and testing of medical textiles.

Resources

The instructors for this course will be available through reassignment of the teaching responsibilities of current faculty members. Existing laboratory equipment and facilities will be used to undertake the formation of prototype samples for the independent projects. However, by Fall 2003 it will be necessary to purchase or acquire some additional specialized equipment, such as a narrow width shuttle loom to weave tubular structures, as well as laminating, joining, cleaning and sterilizing equipment.

Enrollment

The level of enrollment will be 12 students

Course Description

Braiding, weaving, knitting and nonwoven technologies in the design, patterning, formation and assembly of medical textiles and healthcare products. Specialized laminating, finishing, joining, cleaning and sterilizing techniques for conversion of textile structures into medical products. Structure/property relationships in terms of physical, chemical and biological performance of medical textiles and healthcare products.

Students Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the course will be able to:

  1. Relate broad range of formation technologies to medical textiles and healthcare products.
  2. Understand how structure/property relationships determine the performance of medical textiles and related products.
  3. Appreciate the requirements for and significance of cleaning and clean room operations, sterilization techniques, and packaging of medical textiles and related products.
  4. Design, develop, fabricate, assemble and finish prototype medical textiles and healthcare products.

Attendance Policy

Full participation in classes and examinations is expected of all students. Class roll will be taken every class. Students shall receive excused absences for a reasonable number of anticipated absences as well as for emergencies as specified under the University regulations. Refer to:

Students that missed homework or examination due to excused absence will be responsible to contact the instructor for scheduling make-ups. Without documentation of an acceptable excuse, make-up homework or examination will not be allowed.

Students with Disabilities

Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities. In order to take advantage of available accommodations, students must register with Disability Services for Students at 1900 Student Health Center, Campus Box 7509, 515-7653. Visit the website more details. For more information on NC State's policy on working with students with disabilities, please see:

Projects will be focused on the design, fabrication, assembly, finishing and/or testing of prototype medical textiles and healthcare products. Examples of the types of projects that might be selected are:

- absorbency of multilayered structures.

- woven and knitted structures that provide compression support.

- changes in compliance with different braided and nonwoven structures.

- effect of alternative seaming techniques on liquid permeability (leakage).

- changes in mechanical properties due to sterilization regimes.

- pore size distribution and filtration function of nonwovens.

Project Report Presentation Format

The format for the written report and in-class oral presentation will be discussed during the lecture sessions.

Laboratory Safety

Students are required to adhere closely to laboratory safety rules. They will be allowed to use formation technologies and testing equipment only after training by the laboratory managers and/or technicians.
