NEWSLETTER NO 7

Greetings everyone,

May 2003 bring you all that you wish for yourselves! It was great to see such a wonderful turnout at DHS. It was the longest gala we have held. However, we do realize that there were not nearly enough lanes for the 800 entries. The committee will have to take this into consideration next January.

NATIONALS

The plans are progressing well and there appear to be a fair number of overseas competitors, so it will all be very exciting. A last request for anyone interested in advertising in the programme. Strip ads of 4 lines, will now be allowed at R50.00 each. If you are keen, please email Don Dallas at by the 14th February.

Anyone who has not yet told Colleen Bailey about availability for relay teams should notify her in the next two days after which she will finalise the teams. These are always great fun and what Masters swimming is all about.

SA COLOURS

How very exciting it is to be surrounded by our ‘mature’ swimmers who have done so well recently. At the Winter Challenge, Elaine Buck earned her SA Colours for 1500m and Rennie Salati broke George May’s 50m freestyle record and also earned his SA Colours. Well done to both of you – what an example you are to all of us!

T SHIRTS AND SHORTS

These will be at Natal Champs so for those who have not yet paid, bring your money and take delivery of the East Coast shirts and shorts.

Please note that there are no programmes for Natal Champs. If you cannot remember the sequence of the races you entered, there will be lists up at Kings Park. Also bear in mind that the starting time is 9am for 9.30am.

NEW MASTERS SWIMMING CLUB

A special welcome to Barracuda Swimming Club from the Bluff. We look forward to meeting many new members from your turf!

NEW MEMBERS

It is always wonderful to sign up new members and so a very special welcome to Sharron Barber, Julian Davey, Bev McCarney, Keith Richards and Stefan van der Westhuizen. Well done on some of the great times you posted – keep it up!

Of special note, Bev set a new 200 im record and Julian set a new 100 breastroke record. Great swimming!

SPECIAL THANKS

Our sincerest thanks go to Karin Giddy (nee Krugel) for her long-standing support and hard work on the Committee. We are not sure how we will cope without you Karin! Luckily you will be at the end of the telephone! Our best wishes to you and Peter as you embark on your new life together in Johannesburg. We wish you much happiness together.

OLD CROCKS CORNER! (Fortunately not often in use!)

It was great to see you swimming (even if it was only with one leg) in the 800m Des!! A fine effort for a man who had been hit in the surf from behind, by a surfboard. His hamstring was so badly torn and bruised that 10 days later, his leg was still multi-coloured. After much physio, ice packs and heat, however, he assures me that he is very definitely on the mend and when I last encountered him in the gym, he was doing tumbleturns during his training. Well done Des Stieger – this is the spirit of Masters Swimmers.

FAMILIAR FACES

It was a pleasure swopping notes (in the water!) at the gym last week, with an ‘old’ Masters Swimmer who sends his regards to all who remember him (and there were a few that he shared with me!) He is getting into the swim again and assures me that we will see him next season. We will hold you to that George Podmore!

COLIN CABLE

This newsletter would not be complete without condolences to Doreen and your family at this sad time of Colin’s passing. Long will he be remembered for his wonderful sense of fun, tenacity and courage and we salute a true Master Swimmer.

Keep training hard, keep focused. The calendar tells me that Nationals are not too far away now.

SUNSHINE.
