“Out Of The Pit, Up On The Rock!”
Psalms 40:1-4
INTRO.Luke 19:10 tells us, "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." That is the very condition of each man before his conversion to Christ. Lost, separated from a life in God. We had to be sought by God. For the Bible tells us in John 6:44, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him..." We also had to be saved by God. We could not save ourselves. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
But after we are saved, all things change. 2 Corinthians 5:17 promises, "…If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." Aren't you glad God changes things? How many here want to go back to their old way of life before they accepted Christ?
I believe every Christian here this morning will quickly answer, "No way, Christ is precious to me!" In our text, the Psalmist David declares his thanksgiving to God for His great salvation. He continues, in v4 to say, "Blessed is the man that maketh the LORD his trust…" We know this is true for we can feel His Presence, experience His Power, and see His Providence!
Psalms 84:11 promises us, "For the LORD God is a sun and
shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." I'd like to title the message today, "Out Of The Pit, Up On The Rock!" Journey back with me Christian, if you will, to the time and place where you accepted Jesus. Recall your feeling of despair before you met the LORD, Remember your hopelessness without God, and Re-experience the joy you felt when you accepted Christ! If you are here and lost this morning, listen and see your condition as it really is!
NOTICE WITH ME:
(1) Our Position Before Salvation
Text:Psalm 40:2a—“In a horrible pit...”
*The Pit of Sin is Horrible Because:
A. Its Depth is Horrible. We are afar off from God (Ephesians 4:17-19).
B. Its Darkness Is Horrible. This means those within are blinded by the
darkness (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).
(2) Our Position After Salvation
Text: Psalms 40:2b—“He brought me…out of the miry clay, and set
my feet upon a rock, and established my
goings.”
*In the Scripture, Christ is called the Rock of our Salvation (1 Corinthians
10:4), a place of safety. WE ARE SAFE:
- Upon The Rock of His Infallible Work (Psalms 27:1-5).
- Upon The Rock of His Infallible Word (Matthew 7:24-27). John 5:24—“Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
- Upon The Rock, Singing a New Song (Text: Psalms 40:3). Think of the words to the hymn “God be the Glory!”
(3) The Power Of The Savior
Text: Psalms 40:2—“He brought me out….set my feet upon a rock…
established my goings.”
- Only He Can Save (Isaiah 45:22).
- Only He Can Secure (Hebrews 7:25;1 Peter 1:3-5).
- Only He Can Satisfy (Psalms 34:1-3, 7-9).
CLOSING:Aren't you glad Christian God has set you upon the Rock?
Is there one here today that needs to come for salvation? If you are lost today, you are still in the Pit, stuck in the miry clay. But Praise God, He can bring you out! Come while He pleads with your heart.
Christian, are you serving God the way you should?
Can you say, as the old Hymn, "All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give?" If not, come get right with
Him today!
