PE and Sport Premium

The PE and Sport Premium is a package of funding awarded by the Government for physical education (PE) and school sport. It has been designed to help primary schools improve the quality of PE and Sport that they offer their pupils.

The Government have agreed that the funding will be provided up to and including 2020.

This funding is ring fenced, and is allocated directly to primary schools across England, providing them with the ability to buy in expertise and support. Funding is allocated through a lump sum for each school and a per-pupil top-up mechanism.

There are 3 categories that schools should consider: -

  • Physical education ( takes place in the school curriculum and is the planned progressive learning of movement skills)
  • Physical activity ( refers to any active movement that uses energy which can take place in the classroom or the playground)
  • School Sport ( takes place outside the curriculum and can be recreational or competitive)

This premium must be spent on making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and Sport for the benefit of all pupils to encourage the development of healthy lifestyles.
