Evaluation Of Upper/Lower Extremity Injury
Individual Event
Criteria (following evaluation maps in Starkey, Brown & Ryan’s “Examination of Orthopedic and Athletic Injuries 3rd Edition)
- History (15 points)
- Inspection (10 points)
- Palpation (10 points)
- Range Of Motion (10 points)
- Ligamentous & Capsular Tests (15 points)
- Neurological Tests (10 points)
- Special Tests (10 points)
- Correct Assessment (20 points)
- 100 Points Total
Time
- Evaluation will be terminated after 7 minutes; all points will be tallied at this time
Ankle Tape Race
Individual Event
Prep
- Competitors will choose a subject from their own team on which to perform the tape job
- Each ankle will have under wrap applied before time begins
Criteria
- Anchors (must be laid down 1st)
- 2 on the lower leg
- 1 on the foot
- Stirrups
- 3 strips pulling from medial to lateral
- Horseshoes
- 3 strips half-lapped, covering the malleolus
- Figure 8
- Must be completed before the heel locks are started
- Heel-Locks
- 2 medial & 2 lateral
- Cover-Ups
- Distal to proximal, covering up any loose ends of tape
Appropriate & consistent in tightness
- Must not inhibit circulation
- Must be secure
Neat In Appearance
- No wrinkles
- No Threads
- No torn edges
Covers appropriate anatomical structures
- Proximal to the 5th metatarsal
- Distal to gastrocnemius
- Lateral & medial malleolus
Functional & Effectively (scored subjectively by judge)
Score
- Each competitor will earn a time
- Penalty seconds will be added to the time
- 5 seconds will be added for each thread, & torn edge
- 10 seconds will be added for wrinkles & holes in the tape job where skin is visible
- Once the time & penalty point are added, the individual with the lowest total time wins
Tape Relay
Team of 4
- Each team member completes one of the following tape jobs in the specified order
- The next team member may not begin until the previous is finished & sets his/her tape on the table.
- If a team member begins before the preceding member’s tape touches the table, the member must wait 5 seconds before continuing
- Each team will perform the 4 tape jobs on 1 subject of their choice from their team
- The subject may not be participating on that particular relay team, but may be on a separate team
Prep
- Each tape job will have under wrap applied before time begins
- Team members waiting for the preceding member to finish may hold tape in hand outstretched & ready
- For the elbow tape job, the scissors will be provided; the team member must cut the elastikon him/herself after the preceding member is finished & the tape has been set down

2 strips in “x” fashion
1 straight down the middle of the x
- Cover-up
2 “c” strips on the lateral aspect of thenar eminance

3 figure-8’s pinched at thenar webbing
Thumb Spica (to prevent extension)
- 3 spicas around the 1st MP joint
- Pinch at the thenar webbing
Elbow (to prevent hyper extension)
- Anchors
- 2 anchors proximal to the belly of the Biceps Brachii
- 2 anchors distal to the bulk of the forearm
- Elastikon
- 2 strips in an “x” fashion
- 1 strip down the middle of the “x”
Ankle
- Anchors
- 2 on the lower leg
- 1 on the foot
- Stirrups
- 3 strips pulling from medial to lateral
- Cover downs Or Horseshoes
- 3 strips half-lapping distally towards the malleolus, OR 3 strips starting below the malleolus half-lapping proximally towards the Gastrocnemius

Written Simulation
Individual Event
Each participant will receive 1 test with 1 situation & multiple choices of possible actions
The participant must mark the actions that are appropriate at the given time
Each mark will be given a score
- Correct actions chose that will positively effect the situation will be awarded positive points
- Incorrect actions chose that negatively effect the situation will deduct points
- Answers that do not change the situation positively or negatively will receive no points
The list actions will be relevant to decision made in regard to initial assessment, treatment, & rehabilitation of the injury involved
Score
- The positive & negative scores will be added to give a total score
- The highest total score will win
40-Yard Dash (Equipment Carry)
2 Person Event
Criteria
- The 2 person team must work together to pick up & move all the listed equipment 40 yards in as little time as possible
- The equipment will be laid on the ground before the starting line & every item must be carried completely across the finish line
- Items may not drag on the ground while being carried
- Items may be set down in order to rest or re-grip, but must not move while on the ground
- The team may not touch any items before the timer’s signal to begin
- If a team false-starts, the race will be restarted. If a team false starts for a 2nd time they will be disqualified (false starts, and 5 second penalties are at the discretion of timers)
- Any arguments with a timer’s decision will result in automatic disqualification
Equipment
- 1 10 gallon water container (filled with cubed ice & water)
- 1 large ice chest (filled with crushed ice)
- 1 athletic training kit (fully stocked)
- 1 portable treatment table (in carrying case)
- 1 spine board
- 1 splint bag
- 2 fanny packs
Score
- Time begins with the timer’s signal & ends once all the equipment & both team members are completely across the whole of the finish line
- The team with the lowest time wins
Quiz Bowl
3-person teams
All questions will be derived from Arnheim’s Principles of Athletic Training
Each team will be given a buzzer, the first team to buzz in will be given the 1st chance to answer each question
Questions will be presented in jeopardy form
Answers must be given in question form
Correct answers gives a team the right to choose the next question
If a question is answered incorrectly, the question reopens for answering
Point value designated to the question will be awarded to teams for correct answers and deducted for incorrect answers.
There will be a final jeopardy round, where points are wagered for a final question
Highest score at the end of the game wins
Super Relay
3-person teams
Stool Race
- 1st team member sits on a stool
- s/he races moving in a forward direction
- When s/he has crossed the finish line the 2nd team member may start the 2nd leg of the race
Tape-Core Toss
- 2nd team member will start off having ten tape cores
- 2nd team member will attempt to toss tape cores into 3 trash cans
- A trash can will be 3 feet away, one more will be 5 feet away, & a final trash can 7 feet away
- When a tape core has been tossed in each trash can, the 3rd leg of the race can begin
Ice bag run
- The 1st team member will make an ice bag
- The 1st team member will wrap an ice bag on the knee of the 3rd team member with an ace bandage wrap
- Then the 3rd team member must race through the finish line without the ice bag falling off
- If the ice bag falls off, the 3rd team member must return to the start of the 3rd leg & get it rewrapped by the 1st team member
