News and Opportunities
New Green Chemistry Textbook - Green Organic Chemistry in Lecture and Laboratory by Andrew Dicks, member of the Green Chemistry Education Network.
Features Include: Integrates advances in green chemistry research into the teaching of green organic chemistry in both undergraduate lecture and laboratory environments. Each chapter contains a discussion of laboratory experiments and case studies taken from real-world industrial and research laboratories. Primary references are included for all peer-reviewed articles, making it straightforward to consult the literature and adapt laboratory work according to local glassware and equipment availability. A comprehensive appendix (the "Greener Organic Chemistry Reaction Index") profiles over 170 reactions that have been selected to illustrate the range of greener organic chemistry possible in both introductory and advanced level laboratories.

Pre-proposal deadline Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 5 p.m. (EDT)
The ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable (Roundtable) is a partnership between the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® and pharmaceutical related corporations united by a shared commitment to integrate the principles of green chemistry and engineering into the business of drug discovery and production. Current members include Abbott Laboratories, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Codexis, Dr. Reddy’s, DSM Pharmaceutical Products, Eli Lilly and Company, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Lonza, Merck & Co., Inc., Novartis, Pfizer Inc, Roche, Sanofi Aventis and ACS GCI. In 2006, the Roundtable members identified areas in need of focused research to advance the principles of green chemistry and their application in the pharmaceutical industry. Following the green chemistry research areas, in 2011 the Roundtable members conducted a similar study to advance green engineering in the pharmaceutical industry. Ten green engineering research areas were identified and published (C Jimenez- Gonzalez et al., Key Green Engineering Research Areas for Sustainable Manufacturing – a perspective from Pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals, OPRD, article ASAP, 2011).
The ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable requests submission of proposals for review for work on the following targeted green engineering research areas. Proposals will be accepted from public and private institutions of higher education worldwide.
One grant is planned to be awarded. The total award is limited to $150,000 for a grant period of 12 to 24 months. The selection of the awardees will be divided into a pre-proposal and a full proposal phase. Pre- proposals are due to the ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 5 p.m. (EDT), no exceptions. Pre-proposals not received by the deadline will not be considered. Submissions must be a pdf file submitted via email to . Only those PIs who have submitted a pre-proposal are eligible to submit full proposals. Investigators invited to submit a full proposal will be notified by Friday, October 14, 2011 with full proposals due by Wednesday November 4, 2011 at 5 p.m. (EDT).
Whitepaper Released: Green Nanotechnology Challenges and Opportunities
A white paper addressing the critical challenges to advancing greener nanotechnology was issued by the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® in partnership with the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute. The paper identifies the key issues and challenges facing green nanotechnology, along with strategies and opportunities to move greener nanotechnologies forward.

ACS-CEI Award for Incorporation of Sustainability into Chemistry Education - Award Nominations Due September 1, 2011
As part of the American Chemical Society’s goal to “be a global leader in enlisting the world’s scientific professionals to address, through chemistry, the challenges facing our world”, the Society’s Committee on Environmental Improvement seeks to recognize those individuals or groups who have made exemplary contributions to the incorporation of sustainability (see note below) into chemical education.
A goal of the recognition program is to encourage dissemination of the important work of creatively incorporating sustainability into chemical education. Therefore, awardees will be expected to present invited talks on their work as part of a symposium on Chemistry Education and Sustainability at the 2012 Spring National Meeting to be held in San Diego. It is anticipated that 4-6 different projects will be recognized, with each awardee receiving $750 towards travel costs of attending the San Diego meeting.
Both third party and self-nominations are encouraged. Nominations should clearly demonstrate how the nominee or nominees have contributed to the effective incorporation of sustainability into chemical education. The target audience for the work can be one or more of the following: K-12 students, undergraduate students, graduate students, or the general public. Nominations will be evaluated on the broad criteria of innovation, intellectual merit, and potential for broader impact. Additional important considerations include: the extent to which sustainability is an important component of the education work, the extent to which the work supports learning of chemistry, and the overall quality of the design of the nominated work
All nominations must be submitted via email by September 1 to Ray Garant at . Completed nominations must include the following information:

  • full contact information: mailing address, phone number, email address
  • a title and abstract of no more than 150 words
  • a statement of no more than 500 words regarding the learning objective(s) for the work nominated, the target audience, and how sustainability has been incorporated
  • no more than 10 pages of supporting material (lab handout, class activity handout, descriptive materials, etc.) should be included

Submission of materials for consideration will be viewed as a commitment by the individual or group to give a presentation at the San Diego meeting if the work submitted is selected for recognition.
Questions regarding the recognition program can be directed to Dr. Matt Fisher, coordinator of the program, at or 724-805-2356.
