TODAY’S GOSPEL: Although this is Cycle B when we read the gospel account of Saint Mark, today’s passage comes from Saint John: his account of Jesus calling his first disciples. (Next Sunday we will read Mark’s account of this calling.) Note how John the Baptist directs his own disciples to Jesus (There he is: the Lamb of God! ), They leave John & follow Jesus. Note Jesus’ first words: What are you looking for? These words are both an invitation & a challenge, for John’s disciples & for us. What are WE looking for? happiness? success? security? excitement? money? family? healing? joy? warm weather? good luck? eternal life? Are we looking for anything, or do we already have everything we want? Do we even think about what we actually are looking for? Are we on automatic pilot, just coasting? Jesus invites us: Come, and you will see. This sounds simple enough, but it is life-changing, even dangerous. These two who “went & saw” were profoundly changed; they followed Jesus; they were martyred for him. Perhaps we sense that Jesus will ask difficult commitments &
sacrifices from us. Perhaps we choose to “stay in the area” but not get too close to Christ. Or perhaps we choose to “go & see.”

NEEDED: NEW TREASURER:Our Rosary Society treasurer, Sherry Caventer, is no longer able to carry out the treasurer’s responsibilities, due to Fred’s having suffered a stroke several weeks ago. So we need a new treasurer until next fall’s elections. The main tasks are to pay bills related to the March 15 parish dinner plus other Rosary Society projects. Rather than attempting to conduct a new election right now, I am asking for a volunteer to finish Sherry’s term. If you can help, please phone Kathy Schleisman 210-7033 or Father Schott 792-9244.
THANK YOU: to Ruth Lux for donating the poinsettias for the Christmas season, and also to Karen Daniel for her donation in memory of her mother, Martha Daniel.

THE SUNDAY LECTIONARY: Many of you read the Scripture readings before you come to Mass. You can find them online by going to & clicking on the Daily Readings calendar. The Catholic Sunday Lectionary is a 3-year cycle. This year we are using Cycle B, & the gospel passages come primarily from Saint Mark (plus several Sundays of reading from the gospel account of Saint John). You know that the first reading (Old Testament) during Ordinary Time is selected to “correspond to” the gospel passage…it helps us to look at, think about & understand the gospel. The second reading (New Testament Letters) follows its own cycle & often does not correspond to the gospel. So from today until Lent, we will hear the 1st Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians. When Ordinary Time resumes in June (following the Easter Season), we will hear the 2nd Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (4 Sundays), then the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians (7 Sundays), then the Letter of Saint James (5 Sundays), then the Letter to the Hebrews (6 Sundays). Every three years we listen our way through nearly all of the four gospel accounts, the Acts of the Apostles, the 21 New Testament Letters, & the Book of Revelation. A little study/preparation before Mass helps. Go online for brief reflections on the Sunday (& daily)readings:
