Hello! I am Miss Nielsen and I have taught at T.H. Bell for the last 18 years. I love to teach History because it gives students the opportunity to explore and ask questions about the past and how it has affected the present and their future. Hopefully you will enjoy History as much as I do!
Curriculum-
This course covers events and issues in United States history from the Age of Exploration through Reconstruction, emphasizing the 18th and 19th centuries. Topics include European exploration, colonization, the Revolutionary War, constitutional issues, nation building, expansion, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
Students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of each period’s key historic, geographic, economic, and civic concepts. Whenever possible, students will be expected to make connections between historically significant events and current issues, helping deepen their understanding of the context and complexity of civic life and preparing them for civic engagement.
Passing the State Civics Test is now a graduation requirement. We willing be preparing for and taking the State Civics in 1st semester. If students pass this test in 8th grade, they will not have to take it again. If they do not pass, they will have opportunities to take it multiple times in grades 9-12.
Classroom policies and procedures -
* Absences: Work missed due to legitimate reasons may be made up and turned in for full credit. The student will have one week from the time they return to school to do the work unless specified differently.
* Substitute Teachers: There may be a drop in citizenship grade and parent/guardian will be contacted if a student is disruptive with a substitute.
Materials Needed -
* One three-ring binder with folder: This will be used for handouts, worksheets, and notes: The students will be responsible for keeping all assignments in this binder.
* Lined paper: Students will be expected to paper to use for class notes and assignments.
* A pen or pencil: Work must be completed with either blue or black pen, or standard #1 or #2 pencils.
*Colored Pencils: We will be using colored pencils on a regular basis for maps, projects, etc.
Citizenship Standards-
Citizenship grades will be assigned using the school guidelines that are listed in the T.H. Bell Student handbook. These guidelines are based on the following criteria:
1. Classroom behavior: Students should not prevent themselves or others from learning.
2. Compliance to school rules.
3. Attendance: Students should regularly attend class and be on time to class.
4. Class participation: Students should regularly listen and ask questions.
5. Completion and participation in class assignments: Missing work is not acceptable.
Cheating Policy-
If a student is caught cheating or helping another student cheat they will receive a “0" on that assignment or test, an “N” in citizenship for that quarter, and the parent will be notified.
T.H. Bell Late work policy-
All Work is expected to be turned in on the date it is due. Thereafter there will be 5 school days in which homework assignments may be turned in with a 20% penalty I have established. Homework will not be accepted after that time. Daily warm-ups are to be completed in class and will not be accepted late unless the student has been absent. If they are absent they will have 5 schools days to turn then in for credit (they are printed in a warm-up binder in my classroom).
Cell Phone Policy-
Cell phones can be a great tool, or a big disruption in my classroom. In order to limit disruptions I ask that cell phones are not to be used in my classroom unless I have given specific permission for their use. If a cell phone is being used during class without my permission, it will be taken away from the student. The first time the phone is taken away, the student will be able to retrieve it after class. The second time the phone is taken away, the phone will be taken to the office where a parent must come and pick it up.

A 90%-100%
B80%-89%
C70%-79%
D 60%-69%
F0%-59%
**Any + and - grades will be evaluated on students participation and preparation for in class work and projects.
***These are my official grading policies, but I do reserve the right to work with students on an individual basis.

Weber School District requires parental permission for junior high students to view clips of or full-length PG-rated films. At times, this class may watch clips of PG-rated films based on historical events we are studying. 2nd Semester we also will be watching a large portion of the movie Gettysburg which is rated PG for “language and epic battle scenes”. It is my belief that through viewing this and other films, students will gain a better understanding of U.S. History and the Civil War. I will use the utmost discretion in choosing appropriate viewing materials. If you give permission for your student to view PG-rated films, please indicate by signing below.
