The Lower Thames Conservation Authority is seeking a student to assist the Water Management Unit during the summer season.

POSITION TITLE:Water Resources Assistant

CLASSIFICATION:Summer Student, 2017

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:Water Management Supervisor

LOCATION:Administration Office, 100 Thames Street, Chatham, ON

anticipated Start Date: May 1, 2017

anticipated END Date: August 25, 2017

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To assist the Water Management Unit during the summer season with a variety of small projects related to Watershed Monitoring, Planning and Regulations, and Flood Forecasting and Warning

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with surface water quality sampling and flow measurements on the Thames River as well as on agricultural drains throughout the region as part of the provincial partnership
  • Download groundwater level data from data loggers in monitoring wells, taking manual measurements, and quality control checks, as part of a provincial partnership
  • Assisting with surveying to determine flood proofing elevations, losses from erosion, and regulation setback
  • Assist with public consultation around updated Planning and Regulations Policies and Operational Guidelines
  • Update provincial databases for Water and Erosion Control Infrastructure
  • Assist with updates to the Flood Contingency Plan
  • Update an inventory of Planning and Engineering related documents
  • Drafting of reports relevant to the Water Management Unit
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Versatile person with an interest in the outdoors, nature, and conservation
  • Ability to work in both an office and outdoor environment
  • Very organized, with excellent multi-tasking and problem solving skills
  • Ability and desire to assist other staff when required to do so in other work areas
  • Excellent communication skills, maintaining good public and personnel relations
  • Current First Aid Certificate- Standard and CPR an asset
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license an asset

SPECIFIC STUDENT QUALIFICATIONS

This position is partly funded by provincial grants and therefore the candidate must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the position:

  • Provincial Summer Employment Opportunities requirements: candidates must be eligible to work in Canada, be Ontario residents, have student status (be returning to school in fall or within 6 months of graduation), and be between the ages of 15 and 24, or up to 29 with a disability
  • Be enrolled in a University or College level program in a related discipline

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Wage: $12.00/hour

Weekly Hours: 35 hours
