Purpose / This entry-level unit standard is for people who are employed in the by-products area in a meat processing operation.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to extract foetal blood; remove a foetus from a placenta; extract foetal blood; and secure and store extracted blood in a meat processing operation.

Company specifications – product specifications set by the company relating to cuts, weights, presentation, and packaging.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare to extract foetal blood in a meat processing operation.
Evidence requirements
1.1 Preparation for extraction is made in accordance with company specifications.
Range preparation includes but is not limited to – ice slurry, chilly bin, supplied collection bags, vacuum tubes, security of facility.
1.2 Customer selection bag is selected in accordance with company specifications.
1.3 The vacuum chamber is adjusted in accordance with company specifications.
Outcome 2
Remove a foetus from a placenta in a meat processing operation.
Evidence requirements
2.1 The foetus is removed from the placenta sac in accordance with company specifications.
2.2 The blood is drained back into foetus in accordance with company specifications.
Outcome 3
Extract foetal blood in a meat processing operation.
Evidence requirements
3.1 The foetus skin is prepared for incision in accordance with company specifications.
3.2 Foetal blood is extracted in accordance with company specifications.
Range extraction includes but is not limited to – incision, shut-down, tube tying, bag removal, needle disposal.
Outcome 4
Secure and store extracted blood in a meat processing operation.
Evidence requirements
4.1 Bags are removed and placed in ice slurry in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.
4.2 Ice and/or blood are secured and transportation is arranged according to organisational requirements.
4.3 Condemned material is disposed of in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.
