SOUTHWEST TENNESSEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
COURSE SYLLABUS
FOR
PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS (MATH 1530-XXX)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Study of basic statistical concepts including data organization and analysis, including frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and dispersion; probability theory and distributions; sampling methods; estimation; hypothesis testing; regression and correlation analysis. Prerequisite: DSPM 0850 (Intermediate Algebra) or demonstrated proficiency on the placement examination or the mathematics component of the ACT.
REQUIRED MATERIALS: Textbook: Understanding Basic Statistics (6th edition) by Brase and Brase
(Loose-leaf book with Enhanced Web-Assign Code, ISBN 9781285120539)
Graphing calculator: TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
A. General Material:
Through a blend of critical thinking skills and the use of technology:
- The student will demonstrate the ability to gather and interpret data.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to classify data according to the nominal, ordinal, or ratio level of measurement.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to describe data using measures of central tendency, measures of variation, and measures of position.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to solve probability problems using the basic probability rules and formulas for classical and empirical probability.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to use the characteristics of a normal distribution as a model for real-life problems.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to evaluate a claim about a population throughstatistical hypothesis testing.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to estimate population parameters through the use of confidence intervals.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to perform regression and correlation analyses.
B. General Education:
The student will demonstrate the ability to:
1. Build on (not replicate) the competencies gained through the study of two years of high school
algebra and one year of high school geometry.
2.Use mathematics to solve problems and determine if the solutions are reasonable.
3.Use mathematics to model real world behaviors and apply mathematical concepts to the solution of
real-life problems.
4. Make meaningful connections between mathematics and other disciplines.
5. Use technology for mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS: Each student is expected to attend every scheduled class, regularly and punctually. It is the student's responsibility to make up all assigned work that is missed during any absence. Excessive absences may result in the assignment of a failing grade. Under current school policy, attendance is taken daily.
GRADING POLICY: Your instructor determines the grading policy in your class.
FINAL EXAM: A comprehensive final exam will be administered during the final exam period as scheduled by the college.
DROP/ADD: See STCC Bulletin or Calendar for dates( ).
NO STUDENT will be allowed to attend class unless his/her name is on the official class roll or you have proper documentation from the Records Office.
NO CHILDREN or any other unauthorized individuals are allowed in the classroom. No faculty member is authorized to make an exception to this policy without prior approval of the Mathematics Department Chair.
PAGERS OR TELEPHONES: All cell phones & pagers MUST be placed out of sight and turned OFF.
ADA STATEMENT: “Southwest Tennessee Community College is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for all qualified students with disabilities. It is the responsibility of the student to contactthe Counseling Office to arrange for appropriate accommodation. When the disability has been documented and verified, a counselor will notify the instructor regarding any special accommodation to be provided.
MISUSE OF COMPUTERS: “Computers located in classrooms and laboratories are for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.”
NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to make changes in the syllabus if necessary due to time constraints or other unforeseen events. If so, then members of the class will be notified as soon as possible.
