Primary Function:

Under the supervision of assigned staff member, works directly with students in activities programmed by the supervisor. Primary responsibilities include providing support to 4PLUS Program for students who are blind or visually impaired. Responsibilities also include providing support to Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) programs, as needed.Duties require the ability to work in a group or one-on-one with a student to provide additional support and assistance. Duties also require the ability to show concern for and present a positive example to students with disabilities, and the ability to exercise responsible judgment in routine and emergency situations.

Reports to:IESBVI Regional Director; ISD Principal

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Receives and carries out oral and written instructions from immediate supervisor
  2. Supports 4PLUS program for students who are blind or visually impaired
  3. Supports ISD programs, as needed
  4. Works with and services needs of students on a group or individual basis in personal, classroom, recreation, dormitory or busing activities
  5. Assists in the preparation and implementation of instructional materials and activities on an off campus
  6. Knows student’s location, special needs and interests, social development, school progress and/or family background, and confers with other teachers, assistants, houseparents, health staff and/or other staff regarding the child’s welfare
  7. Assists with behavior management issues, including relationship building and the use of specialized techniques to prevent, de-escalate and intervene in situations posing potentially harmful behaviors
  8. Provides oral and written reports as requested or necessary for the welfare status of the students.
  9. Encourage independent functioning of all students

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  2. Knowledge of basic principles and procedures of first aid.
  3. Ability to keep accurate, up-to-date records.
  4. Knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures.
  5. Knowledge of human behavior and needs of impaired students.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to read, write and follow instructions required. Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired strongly preferred. Candidates with the State of Iowa Paraeducator Certificate; or 2 years of related college courses; or COMPASS score of 150 (Reading score of 57, a Writing score of 50, and a Math score of 43) also strongly preferred. Willingness to learn braille preferred.
