Jolly Phonics Games and activities
What’s in the bag? A collection of objects that have only one or two sounds e.g. cup, car, soap, jug, doll, book, bag, dog, cat, man, you blend the sounds and the children name the object.
Initially you might allow the children to identify the objects first before putting them in the bag. As the children get better you can increase the number of sounds. They also enjoy playing this game in groups during structured play.
I say something like “What have I got in my bag? Listen very carefully and I’ll sound it out.”
I also use a fairly large straw basket for this activity
A3 bound book
A laminated version of the story/sound/action sheets for whole class teaching. The children have their own A 4 copy.
Magnetic boards and letters
Use for blending and segmenting
Using first group of letters s, a, t, i, p, n call out a sound at a time to make a word. Ask the children to say the sounds as fast as they can. Do they hear a word?
Say a word. Ask the children to say the sounds and then make the word. Using a finger for each sound is a great way to ensure that the children have identified each sound.
Group 1 flashcards
Place the cards in P Ed hoop and children take turns to sound/say word. Turn word over once it has been identified.
For children who need a lot more practice you can make and laminate the words on different coloured photocopying paper. This gives them several opportunities to sound out and identify the same words. This can also be done as a table activity during structured play.
Lace matching cards (Photocopied from manual and Resources Cd)
Word to picture/ picture to word
Lotto games
The new Resources CD is an invaluable help
Sound cards produced by Jolly Learning or your own are very useful for a quick daily practice of the sounds.
Mime the actions for the children to sound/say the word. The children also love doing this. I show them the word first and they mime it. Start with Group 1 words.
Sliding Game (From Sue Lloyd)
Tap out the sounds in a word on outstretched arm eg p- a -n and then slide hand down to blend and hear the word.
