I.  Course Description

Geometry is a yearlong course that will satisfy requirements for both high school graduation and college acceptance. We will review algebraic concepts and explore new geometrical concepts that will be essential for both higher-level mathematics courses and real life applications. Students will become more competent mathematical thinkers as well as develop a higher level of confidence in their mathematical abilities. It is my goal for the students to develop an appreciation for the applications of mathematics and the influences in everyday life.

II.  Textbook and Required Supplies

Geometry – Holt McDougall

III.  Requirements

1. Students will need: 3-ring notebook and paper

pencils

scientific or graphing calculator – TI-84 is recommended

2. All class work, homework, notes, etc., should be kept in order and written in pencil. Notes and homework may be completed in blue or black pen but tests and quizzes are to be taken with a pencil. All papers should have first and last name and date. All work must be shown in order to receive full credit.

3. Be prepared for daily quizzes on material currently being covered.

4. Bring all supplies and materials with you to class every day.

5. Homework/class work assignments are made each day. They will be reviewed each day. You should complete assignments each day so that you can participate in class discussions. All homework should be labeled with the student’s name, date and page number for future reference. No credit will be given unless the problem is copied and all necessary work is shown. Make an attempt at solving each problem. Points lost will be determined by the teacher based on the difficulty and length of the assignment.

IV.  Instructional Organization

Students will be instructed through direct instruction, demonstration, group work and assessments.

V.  Course Grading Policies, Assessments, & Procedures

Each student will earn his/her grade based on a point system. Points will be awarded as follows:

Major Tests 100 points (bonus points usually available)

Quizzes 10 - 40 points

Class/Homework 10-30 points

Each grading period the student's grade will be determined by a ratio of points earned divided by total points possible. This procedure is true for interims as well. The nine weeks grade will include quizzes, major tests, and daily grades. At the end of each semester, students will take a cumulative semester exam. This counts 20% of the semester grade. Students that fail a major test, will be allowed one retake during the current nine weeks. Students may request a retake and take it after school. NO RETAKES WILL BE ALLOWED AFTER NINE WEEKS GRADES HAVE BEEN TURNED IN.

VI.  Major curricular topics for the year.

Geometry Essentials Similarity

Reasoning and Proof Right triangles & trigonometry

Parallel & Perpendicular lines Transformations

Congruent Triangles Area, Surface Area and Volume

Relationships within Triangles Circles and Conics

Polygons and quadrilaterals

VII.  Absences and Make-Up Policies

Students will be permitted to make-up work missed due to an absence. If the student misses 1 day, the make-up work must be completed within 2 school days. If the student misses 2 or more consecutive days, the make-up work must be completed with 5 school days. If circumstances dictate that the material which had been missed requires more time to be made up, the teacher will have the discretion to extend the deadline.

Students who miss a test, quiz, or other class work due to an absence will need to make up the work after school or at a time agreed upon with the teacher within five days of returning to school. If at all possible, a test or other major assignment missed due to a prearranged absence should be completed before the absence occurs.

Absent students are expected to contact the teacher or a classmate to collect the assignments they miss. Ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all work, especially assignments missed due to an absence, is completed in a timely manner. Any work not made up will receive a grade of zero.

VIII.  Academic Assistance

Academic assistance is available any day before school. If other assistance is needed the teacher and student will come up with an agreed upon time during or after school.

IX.  Steps to Success!!

a. Students are expected to complete assignments, participate in class through note-taking, class discussions and group work. I expect students to follow District 5 policies and I expect students to follow the rules discussed and agreed upon during the first days of class. This includes that students are on-time to class, wear their ID and adhere to District 5 dress code policy. I expect students to be Respectful, Responsible & Reputable!

b. iPAD / electronic device expectations: Absolutely no electronic devices should be seen, heard or used, unless they are being used for instructional purposes or if otherwise stated by the teacher. Students will be given one warning to put their device away. If a student is caught a second time with a device, the device will be confiscated for the remainder of the class period. Parents will be notified for habitual offenders.

There will be times when students will need an iPad or smart phone for different apps and educational games during class.

c. Every student has the right to learn! Therefore, if a student is disrupting the learning environment, I will give a verbal warning. If the behavior continues, I will contact the parent. If the situation does not improve, the student will be sent to his/her administrator.

d. Students & Parents: I do keep my gradebook up to date! Please sign up for Parent Portal to stay informed on your grade. You will receive 4 interims and 4 report cards throughout the school year. Please don’t let your grade surprise you, sign up for Parent Portal today!

As a class, we will be using Google Classroom. Students will be able to access a summary of notes taken in class and examples of worked problems.

Both student and parent should also download the app Remind. This is an app that allows the teacher/ student/ parent to communicate directly through text messaging. I will use this app to REMIND the students and INFORM the parents about upcoming assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests.

e. Parents: The best way to contact me is through the app Remind OR email. I usually respond within 24 hours. Also, please leave a phone number so that I can reach you - sometimes it is easier to discuss issues over the phone than typing them in an email.

X.  Honor Code

In order to foster an environment of mutual trust & respect, we believe, within the community of School District 5 of Lexington & Richland counties, each individual should accept the personal responsibility to exhibit & promote academic & social integrity. The Academic Honesty Policy is being implemented to ensure that students submit credible work that is evident of their content mastery. Students should be totally honest in their dealings with others. They should complete their own work and be evaluated based upon its originality. They should avoid academic dishonesty and misconduct in all its forms, including plagiarism, fabrication or falsification, cheating, and other academic misconduct.
