Whilst we appreciate that this is a busy time of the year as you start back into Term 1, please note that this newsletter contains details for severalevents.
SFD MANUAL UPDATES
The SFD Manual will be emailedto all members in the next couple of weeks. Please ensure that you refer to the new version which has been updated with all our current fees and information and we ask that you keep it on file for reference throughout the year.
QUEENSLAND SYLLABUS INSERVICES2018
Syllabus Inservice classes were presented from January 15th to 17thin Brisbane, which was a wonderful opportunity for members in the north of the country to revise. We appreciate the efforts of both the Examiners and members who made this a successful event, and hope that everyone enjoyed the opportunity to network with other teachers in their area and extend their dance knowledge.
IMPROVING YOUR STUDENTS BALLET TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP
Great feedback was received from our 'Improving Your Student's Ballet Technique' Workshop held on 21st January. The workshop was devised following requests in our Member Survey for more information on how they can improve class technique. The day was presented by Natalie Blenheim and Kylie Densten who imparted some wonderful ideas and techniques that inspired everyone in attendance.
2018 TEACHING CERTIFICATE COURSE
Expressions of Interest are being sort for anyone interested in attending this year's SFD Teaching Certificate Course running from Wednesday 11th April to Sunday 15th April 2018. Please see the attached SFD Teaching Course Registration Form. Applications close on 28th February 2018.
2016 TEACHING CERTIFICATE EXAMS & LEVEL 10 EXAMS
Participants of the 2016 Teaching Certificate Course please note that your final opportunity to sit exams will beSunday 25thMarch 2018. The cut-off date for registering for this day is Friday 23rdFebruary. Also, please note the early Level 10 exam session will be held on the same day.Please notify the Exam Coordinator, Ashlee Furness, as soon as possible via should you have any Level 10 students wishing to sit their exam on this day.

EXAM REQUESTS/DEPOSIT
All members please be advised that submission of exam requests with the $400 exam deposit must be done so by the end of March. The Exam Co-ordinator will start to process exam requests from 1st March 2018.
Please note, that any exam requests received after theend of Term 3 will not be processed in the current year, so ensure that you plan ahead for any Term 4 exams.

COMBINED SCHOOLS CONCERTS2018 - Queensland and Melbourne
We are excited to announce that we will be holding 2 Combined Schools Concerts this year. This is a great opportunity for your students to be part of a fun event. Any school within the society is invited to take part in our afternoon shows. We have so many talented teachers and dancers within the society and it’s great to be able to showcase the wonderful work that everyone is doing. Concert times and numbers will be dependent on entries received. An Item Submission form is attached.
Queensland Combined Schools Concert:
Our very first Queensland Combined Schools Concert will be held on SUNDAY 18th March at St John's Anglican College, Forest Lake in Brisbane and will be combined with a day of Masterclasses in Jazz, Classical and Tap. All Queensland Members and NSW members will be emailed information regarding registrations shortly. The Closing date for submissions is 2nd March 2018.
Melbourne Combined Schools Concert:
The Melbourne Combined Schools Concert is being held on SUNDAY 29th April at The Whitehorse Centre, Nunawading. Closing date for submissions is 16th March 2018.
Lighting requirements must be kept minimal and full details need to be supplied on the attached forms withtime codes listed, by 16thMarch. Items that have not submitted a lighting plan will receive lighting at theStage Manager's discretion. The Stage Manager will endeavour to provide all reasonable lighting requirements; however, no accountability will be accepted in the event of errors.
Just a reminder for schools when submitting items for consideration, please remember that the concert is a family event with young members in the audience, so please keep the words in song choices appropriate.
Please take note of the following points before choosing your items:
- Each dance school will be invited to enter 1 or 2 dances, which are recommended to be of different styles and students should preferably be of different age groups
- Schools will not be able to enter solos
- Items cannot be longer than 5 minutes
- There will be a maximum of 30 seconds changeover between each item
- Any props used must be in place and removed within 15 seconds
- No special effects will be allowed eg. No smoke machines etc.
- The use of backdrops is not available at the theatre.
- No lighted candles, naked flames, fresh fruit, flowers, vegetables or glass may be used
Please return the Concert Item Submission form(s) contained in your SFD Manual by the due dates listed above so that your chosen items will have the best chance of being selected. The Committee will endeavour to include as many submitted items as possible. Please note, a separate form needs to be filled out for each item.
Tickets - Melbourne Event:
Tickets may be purchased through the theatre (not SFD) and are available from Monday 26th March. It’s first in best dressed, with no limit on the number of tickets purchased by each school, so don’t delay and miss out!! Due to long queues in previous years, Southern Federation of Dance has arranged with the theatre that the advertised ticket price is for pre booked tickets only. Additional fees will be charged by the theatre for bookings made on the day. For ticket bookings and enquiries, phone: 9262-6555.
There is a $3.50 handling fee for phone bookings; fee is paid per booking not per ticket.
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This award is presented to either an SFD student or teacher, and recognises significant contributions and achievements within our society and the world of dance. Any SFD Member may nominate candidate/s. This year it will be presented at the Melbourne Combined Schools Concert. If you would like to nominate someone for the 2017 S.F.D Outstanding Achievement Award, fill in the attached and return to head office by Friday9th March.
COMPETITIONS 2018
A reminder that the dates for the Southern Federation of Dance Competitions this year are Saturday 30th June, commencing with the Scholarship Technical Classes, to Friday6thJuly, inclusive. Once again, the venue is The Whitehorse Centre, 397 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading (Melways Ref: 48 G9).

VICTORIAN MASTERCLASSES 2018
The Victorian Student Masterclasses will once again be held at Dance World Studios, 295 Bank Street, South Melbourne. Please save the dates listed below. Entries will be only accepted online this year and further information about prices and registration procedures will be emailed shortly.

Please note thatSFD Examiners encourage students to have a working knowledge of the syllabus to gain value from the Masterclass experience, however any student who does not know the syllabus level in its entirety is most welcome to attend.
INTERSTATE EXAM SESSIONS 2018
Please note the following exam sessions have been set for interstate members:
- Queensland early exam session:Monday 18th June till Sunday 24th June
- Queensland late exam session:Saturday 1st September till Friday 7th September
- New South Wales exam session:Friday 7th September till Monday 10th September
Please note that early interstate exam bookings close March 28th.
Please note that late interstate exam bookings close May 30th.
EXAM DANCE REMINDER
Teachers are reminded to keep the content and music of the exam dance movements relevant to the students’ age. Some movements sourced from video clips and similar media may not be appropriate for inclusion in their routines.Teachers are also reminded that the exam dance music should be cut to the length of the exam dance. Classical dances should be choreographed to piano or orchestral music without lyrics.
SYLLABUS UPDATES
Just a reminder of the Syllabus Update notes that were decided at the 2016 Melbourne Convention. If you are teaching any of these levels this year, please ensure that you update your syllabus notes accordingly.
- Level 8 Jazz has optional alternate tracks for Travel with Balance (different musictrack) and Hip Hop (slightly slowed down). Updated music will be emailed in MP3 format on request.
- Level 9Jazz has an optional alternate track for Elevation step and Modern Study. Modern Study has also had the ending changed. Updated music will be emailed in MP3 format on request as well as the syllabus notes for Modern Study alternate ending.
- Level 4 Classical – Side Stretching: It has been decided that in order for students to get the most benefit out of this exercise it should be performed at a slower speed than what appears in the DVD. Please note that the exercise should be performed once to the right side and once to the left side instead of right, left, right, left as written in the syllabus notes. Examiners may request to have the exercise demonstrated twice in the exam room.
- Level 1 & 2 Classical - Reverence (girls): Can be demonstrated at a faster speed showing 4 curtseys or once right and left with a close to 1st position in between.
- Unseen Work Classical - a new information sheet has been prepared that summarises the requirements for Classical unseen exercises. Please contact Head Office if you would like this sheet emailed.
We were thrilled to have so many successful Exam Candidates in 2017achieving Honours with Distinction. In fact, the list is so long that we have moved it to the end of our Newsletter, so you can scroll through at leisure. It is a tribute to our fabulous members who are continually developing their teaching skills and are achieving greater student results each year.
