FOR REGIONAL OBJECTIVES

ABOUT US

The South West Science Council Inc. is a not for profit regional organization founded in 2015 and incorporated under The Act.

Our core business is community engagement with science and technology.

Our Board of Management is elected from the membership, all being actively engaged in an area of science, science education, technology or engineering.

Our programs are being rolled out in three ways:

  1. As the organiser leading projects that provide new openings for community participation in science-based activities under themes highly relevant to the SW region
  2. As an advocate and co-participant adding value to activities organised by others, giving greater exposure of a wider audience to the underlying science content.
  3. As a coordinator providing avenues for our members to apply their own scientific and technical interests in those respects.

OUR AUDIENCE AND PARTNERS

South West Science Council Inc. projects address two types of audience:

  1. General community and schools across the SW region reached through events that draw attention to the importance of science in everyday applications including future jobs.
  2. Members of the community already engaged to some extent, where enhanced opportunities can meet their desire to learn and contribute more.

We work in partnership with other regional organisations to boost STEM education, build greater understanding in the community of the scientific method and foster attitudes and behaviours that are founded on evidence-based information.

We seek to reach deeply into the community to engender application of best scientific knowledge in dealing with in economic, environmental and societal conditions throughout the SW region.

OUR PROGRAMS

STEM EDUCATION: Within schools and Beyond Schools, projects to support Science and Mathematics teacher at primary Secondary technical and higher Education

CITIZEN SCIENCE:Community participation in gathering data about our region, its natural resources and our practices in management of land and water in both rural and urban settings.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION: In developing better ways to build a sustainable future, establish new patterns of land and resources use, new businesses and employment opportunities.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS: Designed to cover themes encapsulating SW regional issues. Events (conferences, symposiums, seminars, debates, workshops or briefing sessions) are fashioned to suit the defined audience and the outcome desired. Our aim is to ensure that the scientific knowledge being presented is expressed in plain language.

Additionally SWSC will use its website and Facebook to develop on-line forums on selected topical issues. Access will also support to some extent the continuity of engagement sought under the Pathways concept.
